MSN and Yahoo are both primarily IM clients with telephone services tacked on.

Skype is a telephone service with an IM client tacked on. Skype delivers in my opinion higher voice clarity and gives you the option to not only call out but if you want the service the ability for people to "call in".

In any case. Each service requires payment to call landlines and mobile phones.

Skype is dirt cheap as well--$.02 / minute to call the US. I have it set up to charge $10 to my Visa every time the balance goes below $2. I had $10 of Skype credit when I arrived two months ago and call home once a week for 1-2 hours at a time and only last weekend did I have to recharge.

Seconded--the voice quality is just like talking on a regular phone, with no echoing. Plus being able to call cell phones is really convenient.
