My school just changed hands. Before, I had enough break time to get lunch or dinner when I wanted.
Now we have a new owner. He wants us to work from 1-7:50 with no lunch break. Supposedly, we get 10 minute breaks at the end of each class.
So I am curious, how many westerners out there would be willing to work from 1-8 pm without a lunch break? |

It is also illegal. I refer you to article 53 of the Korean Labor Standards Act.
Article 53 (Recess Hours)
(1) An employer shall allow a recess period of more than
30 minutes for every 4 working hours and more than 1 hour
for every 8 working hours during the working hours.
(2) A recess period may be freely used by workers.
10 minute breaks between classes don't cut it. |

"Not I", said this waygook western English teacher.
You're teaching 7 hours straight each day? Man, that schedule stinks.
Did I mention, those 10 minutes breaks are for unpaid prep, not smoking or eating. And if you exclude the 10 minute breaks between classes, that comes up to slightly less than 30 hours a week which is a usual hagwon contract amount of teaching hours instead of being paid 5 hours over time for 35 hours a week. Luckily my hagwon pays the 10 minute break, but most don't. Find out if yours does. Since contracts are always renegotiable or changable, talk to your higher ups on getting a lunch break. I would demand 6 50 minute classes a day with a 1 hour lunch say at 4 or 5 PM, no more! I must say 6 50 minute classes a day is still a heavy teaching load, but common in hagwons as I am teaching 5.5 to 6.5 hours a day myself and feeling burned out after many months. These kids are not easy to pleasy so they demand allot of attention and classroom management which is exhausting as you already know. 7 classes a day would be brutal burn out. |

NO! Not having a lunch break is ridiculous. Not only is it unhealthy for the teacher to not have a lunch break but it seriously undermines the quality of education to have a teacher that is burned out. |
