Hello,

I'm going to Thailand for a week and my inner old man tells me that I should get some health insurance for my time there. I know, I know, live by the wind and so forth. But my sister works in insurance (a different kind) and relates horror stories to me all the time.

I've gone through Blue Cross in Canada before, but any others? Just to cover basic 'what ifs'.

Thanks.

Short time travel insurance and emergency medical you can get at the airport. Works out to a little over 1000 won per day for short term.

Kiosk on the back wall of the departures level and offices on the 2nd floor.
Just for reference - arrivals are on the 1st floor and departures are on the 3rd floor. The banks and other offices are on the 2nd floor. Access to the 2nd floor is via the escalators located between checkin counters "F" and "G".

On the back wall you have your choice of MERITZ, AIG, Samsung and LIG travel insurance. They are also located between "F" and "G"

I hope you don't mind if I join this thread rather than starting a new one.

Short term insurance is easy enough at the airport...done it dozens of times.

HOWEVER, my question is, I am going back to Canada for the first time in 3 years and I have been away for almost 8 years. I am no longer covered by OHIP. I believe I have to be back to stay for about 3 months, I believe (could be 6) until I am back on the plan.
Can anyone put me in the right direction regarding coverage in Canada? Do you know a good international company that will cover me in Canada?

Thanks. I gotta get the ball rollin' on this.

If you are returning home to stay, then apply ASAP. Your 3 month waiting period starts when you apply.

Idon't know about OHIP specifically (check their website or send them an e-mail with your specific query) but in SOME of the provinces the 3 month wait is WAIVED for immigrants and those who are repatriating (returning home) after extended periods outside of Canada.

In Alberta for example there is only a 3 month wait IF you are covered by another provincial plan. If you have no coverage then your enrollment begins on application and payment of your premium (but there is a requirement to prove residency (show a lease, Alberta DL, bills or utility hookups in your name, etc).

For the OHIP, the 3-month waiting period begins the first day you can prove that you are physically in Ontario, not when you apply. If you land in Toronto, your passport stamp should be fine.

After three months, you will be covered again by the OHIP, but you need to stay in Ontario 5 of your first 6 months. That means you are allowed to travel up to 30 days out of the province during your first 6 months and then afterwards everything is back to normal.

However, how are they going to know/prove that you have been away more than 30 days if you do? Beats me! I guess they can't really, unless you go abroad and then they can check your passport.
