Woohooooo!!!!
I luuuuuuuuuurve Itaewan. In fact, think I will make up a song and dance about how much I love Itaewan.
Ok, so I don't love it that much, but its not bad.
Just stick to the 3Alley End of town and you'll be fine.
Yes? |

yes, I know another thread on Itaewan, but
for those of you coming here to tell me so, wouldn't it be less of a waste of your life just to not-open this thread? 0_0 (geez that was a mouthful)
consider the people who are reading Daves for the first time |

Yay, drunken white boys. I lived across from a frat house when I was in college, and I was a bouncer. I didn't move across the globe to deal with that again. |

What's the difference between drunken white boys and drunken Korean boys? |

Itaewon is fine if you desperately need a foreigner fix. I saw maybe 3 Koreans out and about on the streets when I was there.
It was sad... really sad...
My Korean students here in the states say they will not go near the place. |

Itaewon is a good place to eat foreign food. It's not as scummy as it used to be. Your Korean students are probably afraid of foreigners. |

Itaewon is a bit of a chameleon, and it has definitely been getting better over the ;last few years. Many more young adventurous Koreans are discovering there is more to life than kimchichigae.
For those of you who want to avoid the drunken masses, try visiting during the week, when Itaewon is honestly one of the most relaxed uncrowded neighborhoods in all of Seoul.
Saturday night, it morphs into something quite...well....different. |

To visit it "during the week" one must live there. The rest of us work. |

Well, if you work in Seoul, you could manage a visit. I suppose that would be more difficult if you were in say, Ulleongdo.
Still, to the haters, we'll see you in a few weeks time. Just try to remember, some of us call the place you love to hate "home". Pick up after yourselves. |

Nice thread Natalie. I'm not homeless anymore, BTW; contract worked out, and I'm now living and cruisng in rural Korea.
Itaewon indeed rocks. I am now an hour or so away from Seoul, but I go back to Itaewon every chance I get, and I plan on basically living there every weekend and every vacation day I get. May even bum around there tomorrow; Happy Constitution Day, fellow public schoolteachers!
Itaewon ties with Appleton Wisconsin* as my favorite locale in the world. Not just because I need my foreigner fix, but also because--- as I discussed with a visiting businessman from Brisbane last night--- Itaewon is the only place I know of that has big city excitement and culture yet maintains small town friendliness and safety. (Well--- it's safe by American standards at the 3 Alley end; that's good enough for me.) It's also damn near the geographic heart of Seoul, and you can really feel the energy.
*Those of you who've never been to Appleton may be confused by that, but everybody I know who's seen Harry Houdini's hometown--- including Waygooks I've met here--- understands the addictive nature of A-Town. |
