I think this forum brilliantly illustrates one fo the key problems with foreigners here in Korea, and sometimes it feels nasty to be counted as one of them. Why are "we" all so greedy, keen to grab money and eager to decieve.
Since i started looking at this forum a week ago, I have spotted the following amazing deals!
1 - someone selling a TV for 1.3 million won. Ok its a nice TV im sure but you can but flatscreens new for 700,000 at yongsan or techno mart including mounting and guarantee.
2 - someone selling a Nintendo DS lite for 200,000 won. I bought one myself for 150,000 including all the extras the poster was offering.
3 - someone selling his umbrellas, yes his umbrellas and moreover asking for 5000 won for each of them
4 - people selling paperback books, please just give them to your friends!
5 - people selling dvds for 5,000 won a go. Right now outside my office i can buy 4 for 10,000 won i even saw one guy trying to sell his VHS videos at 5000 won each!
If you sell soemthing second hand and you need rid of it sharpish i think you should be looking at making a loss. It's a sorry fact of live. But one day in the future you'll pick up a bargain from someone else forced to sell their stuff for a heavy loss. Yes I am cheap and thats why im looking on here. If i had moeny i'd buya shiny new one wih a guarantee and an excessive amount of packaging. I think selling stuff for more than it's worth new is just plain deceitful and people should stop this nonsense. |

If you're not happy with the price, don't buy it, or make a lower offer
as for the DVDs or VHS, I'd happily pay 5000 for something that was really good, rather than the crap videos I normally find |

| If people are stupid enough to buy crap at the high prices, then it's their fault. |

I don't think it is often malicious in nature, just ignorant of current prices mixed in with some low-key greed. It is still annoying, but it is usually just a mistake.
The thing I will never understand is the people selling a power strip for 5000 won. Just give it to someone or leave it. Or what that guy said about selling the soap for 2000. I will never understand those people. We make so much here (factoring in taxes, cost of living, free apartment, etc), how can you possibly need that money. |

My favorite is the guy posting his plunger and toilet brush for sale last week!
That's miserly!
My least favorite are the guys trying to sell older camera stuff for the roughly the same price as the current new, and then they throw a tantrum when people point out the current prices. |

Unless it's over 20,000 why bother selling it? just give it away. Think about when you first came here, many people don't have much/any money. A few weeks ago I gave away a bed for free, I paid 100,000 for 2 years ago.
But as you know, some people are just so freaking tight. Next time you want to sell something for 2,000, think again. |

Why not. I live in the boonies and it makes my life easier to buy books this way.
Anyway every penny counts. If somebody wants to sell their half used soap for2k then let them. If you don't want it don't buy it. You aren't being ripped off. |

Did you ever shop at the dollar store? I did and I've found that I get better stuff for the equivalent of a dollar here on Dave's than a dollar at the dollar store in my home country! Why pay full price for something new when you can get something used for less and it works the same? I believe in secondhand goods and reusing~ I'm also an avid recycler.
Why bash people for reducing waste? Hey, if they want to get a dollar out of it, think how it does take time and 900 won to take the subway to go meet someone. Charging more secondhand than something cost originally is not the same. Hopefully no one is forcing anyone to buy at ridiculous prices anyhow; buyers make decisions.
Donating goods is great and I have donated clothes and bedding while in Korea but sometimes you like to see that it will actually be used. Sadly in my home country a lot of donated goods are not used but I don't know how it is in Korea. Did you read about the donated food in California being dumped in the desert? Supposedly they were going to feed it to pigs instead of the people who it was intended for then it was discovered rotting in the desert. Crazy. |
