china has no beach, so thailand wins in a landslide.

Depends on what you want. If you are going now, it is low season in Thailand, so it is cheaper. In high season, China can actually be a little cheaper (though colder if you don't go to the south).

So far, Thailand 3, China 0.

To respond to laogaiguk, the goal is:

- a low-key break
- a lot of exploring and sight-seeing on foot
- cheap eat and stays

... lounging around on a beach would be an added (huge) bonus!

Thailand wins hands down. Bangkok for city life and Phuket or Pattaya for beaches.

I've been to both...and am a budget traveler. I'll go against the crowd and put my vote in for China. Why? Prices are somewhat comparable if you go public transit/hostel in China. But the deal breaker: airfare. China could possibly be 1/2 the cost of a ticket to Thailand. So overall, China would probably be cheaper but you'll get less luxury for the money.

China has a lot of things to see around Beijing, that's for sure. Food is good. No beach though but I don't really like the beach that much anyway.

I don't know if only 4 days in Phuket is worth it. I would imagine Beijing would have more to offer for 3 days. How about Hong Kong or Taiwan? They both have beaches and interesting things to see and can be done easily in 4 days.

I took the ferry to China.

The cheapest place I stayed was a university dorm. The Central City Hostel in Beijing was only 125 RMB. Train tickets were a real bitch to get.

In Beijing there were people sleeping on the concrete in front of the train station because they couldn't get a ticket home.

I should have got them through a travel agent before leaving. Another guy told me if you order them online you can get plane tickets for travel inside of China very cheap.

China has beaches, but I've seen better beaches at lakes in Kansas and Oklahoma.
