|
|
The SMOE has taken it upon itself to take over my school's native English teacher program, making me go through tons of paperwork that my school never even dreamed of hassling me with. Just curious if anyone else at private schools are having similar experiences. |

What part of Seoul are you in? Are you a regular, FT public school teacher? Why were you not a part of SMOE in the first place? Will you get any additional benefits by being with SMOE? Who is your contract with, SMOE or someone else? |

I hope so! I love my school, teachers and students, but they have never had a foreign teacher before and were totally unprepared for the basic things that I needed (eg a washing machine, a bed that isn't kids-size, cooking utensils beyond a toaster). I've suggested to them numerous times that instead of them all falling over themselves to help me, which I do of course appreciate, that maybe just one specified teacher had the role of taking care of things I need. Perhaps SMOE could offer them some guidance on these kinds of things. As lovely as they are, they don't always take my word for things - so when I tell them I need an ARC and medical insurance booklet for example, they will laugh and smile and say things like "maybe", or "i'm not sure about that". When the message comes from an official/Korean person, it tends to be given more attention. |

No, wasn't part of SMOE before, and the benefits are actually worse than they were with a private school contract. I'm full time. |

My public school job (which was a deal between me and the school, no EPIK, GEPIK,etc) is being taken over by
get ready
YBM.
Oh the agony. Now, thats why I wanted to work at a public school. So I could work with Koreans all day long and still get slapped around by a hogwan. Joy, joy. So, don't feel too bad. It could be worse |

I'd quit. I did the dispatch thing in Japan and never again. All the negatives of a hagwon rolled in with all the negatives of a public school. No bleeping thank you. |

I was under the impression that ALT dispatching services are illegal. Or is that a new thing? |

It's a grey legal area. Not only is the legality of dispatch services questionable, but they also cut corners where they can, but a constant turnover of teachers insures that nobody ever calls them on it.
If dispatch work becomes more common in Korea, I could only imagine that it would be worse, not better. |

Yeah. I renewed with my school very recently, too. Of course none of this YBM stuff was mentioned at the time. I really hope I don't have to quit. I've had a fantastic year at my school (so fantatsic I stupidly renewed), and I'm waiting for this to ruin it all. The real fun is supposed to start in September when YBM takes over completely. |
