I'm going to show a movie to my high school students. My co-teacher thinks I should show it with Korean subtitles, since our students won't be able to understand anything otherwise. I know there was a recommendation for "High School Musical" on another thread, but I can't find the Korean subtitles anywhere. I asked about the DVD in Youngsan, and they said it didn't have it, and I haven't found them to download anywhere. I've downloaded "Mr. Bean's Holiday" and a Wallace & Gromit movie, which were also recommended; I couldn't find Korean subtitles for those, either, but thought they might work well without, even with very low level students. I'm going to watch them tonight.
But I really want to show a movie about high school life in the US (or any English-speaking country)! I can't really think of any, except '80s John Hughes films, which I'm sure are also difficult to find with Korean subtitles, and I'm not sure the kids would be interested. Are there any good high school movies with subtitles out there?? And which bit torrent sites have the most Korean subtitles available? It's a treat, there doesn't have to be any lesson connected, just a movie they'll enjoy.
Planning to watch a movie as a treat after exams is almost as much effort as planning a normal lesson!

This is kind of a lame reply because I have only limited expericence with it. This may be a waste of your time, but it is not 100% clear from your post if you know- you can download movies using bit torrent in the normal mannor and then add a small subtitle file (to the folder with the movie) later (I have done it using VLC player).

I'm the one who recommended "High School Musical" - it hasn't officially come out in Korea yet - they're probably still working on the Korean subtitles, etc. (although over a year old, it just got released in Japan last month...)

The great thing about the copy I picked up off a street vender in Itaewon was that there were no Korean subtitles - just English (and a karoke version for the songs - which won an award for choreography...)
But the same vender seemed to be out of them the last time I checked...

What I would recommend is School of Rock (Jack Black at his best...) I showed it with Korean subtitles first, and the best scenes I'd later replay using English subtitles. My Korean high school students really loved it (but I doubt that a lot of the rock-n'-roll slang and idioms got translated very well ...)

School of Rock is sheer brilliance. The kids are elementary age, but I still think they would like it.

Friday Night Lights is a great depiction of HS life in teh South where football is KING. It would be interesting for the kids to see that there's more to HS in America than studying.

Clueless, Grease, Mean Girls, Saved, She's All That, Saved by the Bell, 90210..... Well, those are all about high schools but glamorized. Can't think of any realistic high school movies.

I don't think Ferris Bueller's Day Off or Fast Times at Ridgemont High would be appreciated much by Korean school administrators or parents...

Mr. Holland's Opus would be a nice movie to show (if you can find it...) It presents some modern cultural history and depicts the gradual decline of the American public education system, while glorifying a dedicated high school music teacher ...

Say Anything was also nice, but (like Opus) is probably better suited for university students.

in case anyone else is interested. I actually showed "High School Musical" today with no subtitles because I couldn't get them to work (and now it turns out they were in English anyhow... but that might be a good idea. I think they can read a lot better than they can understand English, so they'll understand and still get some English practice out of it!). One class watched fairly attentively, and one class mostly slept or played with their mobiles, although they did perk up during the songs.
& why do Korean teenagers find armpit hair so funny?! In both classes, they laughed so much when you could see a guy's armpit hair... not the height of comedy for me, but whatever!
"School of Rock" is a great suggestion! I think I'm going to go try that one tomorrow.

"She's the Man" went over extremely well with mixed nationalities in the states, including a couple of Koreans. Definitely worth a shot.

On the GOM site how do you use the subtitles? All the file seem to be something called .sml?

Harold & Kumar / Team America would probably get you in trouble considering their both pretty vulgar.

I agree 'School of Rock' is perfect for high school students.

Shreks 1,2, and 3. All my students had already seen them, so subtitles were not neccesary, but they were still very interested in watching them again.
