|
|
We've all seen the stories about South Korea building such and such a tower in Dubai, UAE, Saudi Arabia, etc. I've always naively just assumed it was because they had expertise in the area - which they indeed do.
However, the real reason south Korea gets these contracts is that it has no problem adhering, and adding to the human rights abuses practiced in these countries. They eagerly jump at contracts that no North American or EU country will touch, due to the archaic conditions that the workers from - you guessed it India and South East Asia - are subjected to.

So the next time a Korean proudly boasts over their latest tallest whatever, be sure to tell them the shameful reason why they are leaders in this area.
I guess history is doomed to repeat itself. Just as there's a dead Chinese for evey mile of railroad in Canada and the US, there'll be a dead indian for every floor of the sumptuous Dubai tower. |

Oh come on people. There are a myriad of examples of Western companies involved in the abuse of workers in the developing world. I'll venture the clothing and shoe industries for a start. You can come up with the rest by yourselves. |

Looks like someone is on their "high and mighty horse" looking down.
If you think US companies are "above" exploited cheap labor than you are severely out of touch with reality.
Maybe the OP can tell illegal immigrants washing dishes in the US that they should be getting at least minimum wage. Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure children mowing lawns across the country in the US aren't getting minimum wage either. Give Johnny $5 for 3 hours of manual child labor and everything is fine and dandy because you gave him a 5 minute break with a glass of lemonade. |

I don't know if you're too right about illegal immigrants in the US making below minimum wage. From my experience (working in many different kitchens) the immigrants washing dishes are making the federal minimum wage...no more, no less. That's why they get the job.
I agree that US corporations jump at the chance to exploit workers but they usually take their dirty work outside the states. |

While it's a good point, I don't know if this is necessarily the best example.
If you check out the minimum wage posters that employers are required by law to post in the workplace (at least in Washington State, although I think it's mandatory everywhere) you'll see that there are sections devoted specifically to minors and to agricultural workers. Minors and agricultural workers are not held to the same minimum wage and hourly requirements as everyone else in the United States.
When it comes to illegal workers and sweat shop labor though, yeah, the United States definitely contributes it's (more than?) fair share to the problem. |

Lots of Arab states have contract riders saying things like you won't deal with Jews while building the project. So, yeah, lots of North American companies won't touch those kinds of contracts. |

You're quite right about their willingness to exploit/oversee Sri Lankan, Indian, Pakistani etc. slave labor (Korea - Azn Pride!). However, the design, structural design, architecture and mechanical engineering for Burj Dubai (Tower) was provided by Skidmore, Owings and Merril (Chicago). If Koreans are claiming it as 'their' tower, it would be pretty laughable. |
