A Korean friend called a couple rental agencies and no one will rent to a waygook.

Any hints? Have you rented a car in Korea? What company? If you are an American, did you need an international driver's license?

Yeah, I rented a Starex last fall when I took a group of university students on a trip to Kanghwa Island. Although it was rented in my wife's name (she's Korean), they also photocopied my license. I forget the name of the company.

Friends of mine came to visit last year from England and rented a car over the internet. I think they did it following links to different agencies from the Incheon airport website ... I believe it was Hertz. Both were English.

Jeju of course is so tourist oriented that I had no problem at all renting a car there.

I rented on Jejudo, too.

Try Hertz, Avis and other big names. If they won't rent to a waygook, sue them in the USA.

You need either a Korean licence or an International one.
You need a major credit card.

All the major rental companies will rent to you if you have the two items listed above.

no you dont. when i rented a car on Tuesday it was the same process as every other time. I took a wad of cash to the car rental place, said I wanted a car, gave them cash, they looked at my us lisence, they wrote down the number, they gave me the keys.
Tom, while you are right alot of the time and I applaud you for it, there are times when you do not know what you are talking about.

Canadian driver's license was alright and they did NOT want a credit card, in fact offered a discount if I didn't use it (typical Korean business practice of wanting to pocket it and avoid the tax man).

Well, it's just like at the banks in Korea. Every one has different rules and regulations. Even different branches of the same company will have different rules. I have rented cars in Jeju and Kyoungju with no problem. I did need a Korean license, which I have, but didn't need a credit card. But, this info doesn't really matter since each branch will be different.

Thanks, guys! I just wanted to know if it was possible. Has anyone done this around Seoul? Got any branches that I can contact and ask?

I stand corrected.

In my PERSONAL experience (and I only deal with the global chains) I have needed to show either an international or Korean drivers licence and a major credit card.

AND I stand firm in my statement that,
"All the major rental companies will rent to you if you have the two items listed above." with the proviso that some of them require you to be over 25 years old as well and since I am over that age I often forget about that restriction.

avis seems to really have their act together. i went into the Yangjae branch got a pamphlet in English and talked to the woman behind the counter. You dont need credit card just cash up front and international or korean license. all rates include unlimited mileage and personal accident insurance (bodily injury unlimited property damage up to 20 million won)

they have 14 locations in seoul and at all airports and ktx stations let me know if you want any specific branch phone numbers
