I started Hapkido classes last night. Looks like I'll be doing it five days a week. I absolutely love it--its such a great way to kill stress, and burn calories/get in shape. Plus, my instructor is Canadian and its located only a block from my hagwon.
Is anyone else taking martial arts here? How do you find it? What are you taking? |

| Where are you studying? I started a bit last year but moved too far from my original dojang. |

| Did Hapkido (notice my user name) for 4 years in Seoul, and still keep in contact with my Master and several students. A good martial art, in my opinion. Enjoy it. |

I did taekwondo in the States, but not very seriously. So I do it here, much more seriously. No foreigners at my studio, nobody speaks English. I love it. Kwanjangnim and his family have become my family here. |

I heard Taekwondo was mostly leg strikes. Is Hapkido a much higher intensity?
And can you find Jujitsu classes in Korea? |

There's a fair amount of kicking in hapkido, but there's more of an emphasis on breaks, locks, and throws. |

Intensity depends much and you and your instructor. |

I did Cheong Kyum Kwan hapkido on weekends in Myeong-Gil, before work forced me to stop. Although the location is a little out of the way for some, Grandmaster Choi speaks excellent English and was able to explain the significance of any grappling motions / breathing exercises I was required to do, which was really helpful.
He also has a gym in Yong-In, outside of Seoul. I recommend checking out his website and contacting him to ask about classes.

Now, having reclaimed some free time from work, I want to do something more competitive as well as hapkido, but I'm not all that enthusiastic about taekwondo or rolling about on the floor doing jujitsu. Was thinking about gongkwon yu-sul, but it might be too hardcore for my sadly unathletic shape. Does anyone know of any karate / kung fu / wushu clubs that are located in Seoul? I'm still a hapless yongook-saram so I need an instructor who can speak a couple of words of English... |
