Myeong-dong becomes big party

For eight days starting Saturday, the Myeong-dong area in downtown Seoul will be transformed into a mid-town party district.

The 2007 Myeongdong White Night Festival will, quite literally, light up the district with performances from various pop singers and hip-hop dance groups.

"Though many individuals are going away for the summer holidays this year, many others do not have that opportunity," said Lee Dong-hee, who heads the Myeongdong District Development Association. "This festival is designed to offer enjoyment for those who are not going on vacation."

The festival, themed Summer Night Party, is geared toward the 20-something crowd that frequents Myeong-dong.

DJs will pump live music into the streets, giving the bold the opportunity to get up on stage and show the masses their latest moves. Those confident enough with their singing and dancing skills can take part in select competitions during the festival.

Even the less brazen will have their chance to take part in the festivities with gift giveaways.

The Seoul City Government hosted the White Night Festival in 2004. This time, the Myeongdong District Development Association has taken the lead -- though they hope it won't be the last.

"We would like to turn this festival into an annual tradition," Lee said.

With a 2 a.m. closing time on festivities, Myeong-dong merchants are hoping the crowd will keep the party going locally, stimulating the area's nightlife.

The festival will run from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. from July 28 to Aug. 4 in front of Woori Bank's Myeong-dong branch.

If they had any decent bars/pubs in the area then I wouldn't mind going down to check it out, but don't fancy standing around until 2am listening to k-pop boy bands with their fluffy hair prancing around on stage.
