Anyone have info on Mt chirisan? Does the train go there and are there tourist areas nearby? What city should I stop at on the train? Any hotel recommendations?

If you're talking about Jirisan, you can use this link for info.
My church ward had an overnight campout there last week. It's a great place for recreation. |

Thanks for the link. I am still not sure where the main train station is or how far it is from those sites on the link. |

I've never been there, but I'd like to go someday. Thus, all of my information is drawn from the internet.
I can't figure out where the nearest train station is. I'd assume it's Gokseong Station, in the nearby county. Are you set on taking a train? There are buses that go there, too. Jirisan straddles a few provinces and counties, but one of the main points is in Gurye county. I don't have a link to the bus schedule from Seoul, but I'd imagine buses go there. There are about 28 buses a day to Gurye from Gwangju---about 4 hours from Seoul by bus---for 6,400 won. You could take a train to Gwangju, if you wanted.
There looks to be a ton of nearby tourist attractions. The link given above has some good suggestions. Also check out this one for a list of trails and attractions inside Jirisan National Park: http://www.gurye.go.kr/eng/jiri/climbing.htm There's some more information about a few specific places in the park here: http://wiki.galbijim.com/List_of_notable_places_in_Gurye
Probably what I'd do, unless you got more specific instructions, is take a bus to Gurye and from Gurye-eup (the main town there), take buses to where you want to go. You may have to sit down and plan out an itinerary to make the fewest number of bus trips and to make the most of your time.
No hotel recommendations, but from what I understand if you do some serious hiking there, there are designated shelters and camping grounds. If you're just going hiking for a few hours or for the day, take your pick of the love motels in town. The tourist motels will cost 90,000 won per night and up. If you wanna go that route, there are some profiles, pics, and prices here, in Korean: http://www.gurye.go.kr/culture/infor/in_loading.htm Use the buttons on the left to see different types of hotels.
There's not much, surprisingly, online about going there. Try a search on Jirisan here, as there have been a few posts about it. |
