I have a B.S. in Economics a 120 hour TESOL certificate and 1 year teaching experience in Korea.

I am thinking about completing an on-site MA in TESOL at a university in Thailand. What would be the value of such a degree be in Korea? I am also interested in how valuable this would be in other ESL markets (Hong Kong, Japan etc.).

I have seen some interesting programs in Chiang Mai - does anyone have a recommendation for a Thai program or general advice on how to choose one?

---------------------------------
* Others have told me they recommend I enter a program in an English speaking country - however, for several reason I am not interested - it is a Thai MA or none at all.

* Others have told me they recommend I enter a online program- however, for several reason I am not interested - it is an on-site program or none at all.

I have a masters in professional communications and a teaching degree. Unless you want to teach at a uni it no one seems to care...

Sounds like you are frustrated - but the fact that you are better qualified to teach at a university does count for something. Do you think a degree from Thailand would count for much if seeking a position at a Korean university?

It won't count for much at all. In this context, as with other places around the world, it's not just the degree, but where it's from that counts. Thai universities don't rank internationally, and their programs would be considered suspect in quality by many. Same thing for most places outside of North America and Europe. That's how it is.

well first off you have to have a degree in an english speaking country to even get a e2 visa, unless your degree major is english. if i was you i would do a masters online from an english speaking country.

Have a look over on Ajarn.com for threads about what you are asking.

Maybe if you were a non-native speaker it might be worthwhile otherwise do one from a real country.

passport220, you could do an on-site M.A. from an American college in Thailand. Framingham offers an on-site MA in Thailand. It is an intensive course. You read the material before class and then have two intensive course for three weeks. You spend as much time in class as a normal M.A. I have calculated it.

I think an M.A. from an American college would be much better.

I agree...Framingham also has two M.A. programs available in Korea.

One for the MA in International Education and another for a M.A. in TESOL.

The TESOL one is having an orientation this September, and courses will begin in February for the two year program.

i don't think that typical korean unis carry any more weight internationally than thai schools. i'd go with the thai uni primarily because, hey, you'd be in Thailand!
