I have been working at my hagwon for 5 months.
Its a great hagwon and i have a good relationship with co-workers.
i really have nothing to complain about here.
but
i have an offer for work somewhere else next month.
long story short > this job is f***ing awesome.
now...
1. how do i go about changing jobs?
2. what is the process i need to follow with immigration etc?
3. is it absolutely necassary to get some kind of letter of release?
i have a feeling that my boss wont give me this.
the hagwon is almost at full capacity for the 1st time and i think she will
take it very personally if i abandon ship especially with such little notice period and also i am the only foreigner teacher.
(there is a small chance i might be able to give a full 30 days notice though)
i think i should fabricate some kind of story to get that letter of release but cant think of anything...special. anybody have a success story in this regard?
if this question has been covered before, please post a link
thanks |

I understand the feeling of ambiguity, but despite the fact that we don't tend to sign binding contracts when we are 'just out of college,' I'm sure you will see it is not only reasonable to give proper notice, but sensible in the long run.
You might get black listed, it's not honorable, etc.
However, even assuming you gave proper notice, there are still extra complications involving the period between release and starting a new contract.
Indeed, for my own situation, I'd like confirmation of the process (is it a 5 day sojourn in another country before returning?)..
You might have to realise that a the offer is (a) too good to be true or (b) you might not be able to start on time, or (c) you'd have to do funky things to keep it. |

Just walk out. Don't worry about anything. if you have a gargantuan job offer then take it. Contracts are for chumps and aren't worth signing anyway. In fact why did you sign it in the first place? Are you a chump? Did you not know that it was for a set period of time? Are you prepared to give repay your current boss all his out of pocket expenses for hiring you? |

I would assume that you can't just walk out if you're on an E2 visa. You would need a letter of release in that case. If you mentioned what visa you were on, I missed it. What kind of visa do you have? |

He should just walk out anyway. No need to worry. Obviously contracts are not serious to this poster otherwise he wouldn't be looking for a story to tell his boss. |

I'm coming to Korea soon.
I thought most (or almost all teaching jobs) were on contracts, and tied to the E-2 visa.
If I want to leave a school for another better situation (common when you come to a new country for the first time) what would I have to do?
Thanks to anyone who has info. |

Teaching job are tied to to contacts and the E-2 visa. mrsquirrel is using sarcasm to show the original poster how incredibly untactful and selfish he/she is being.
The simplest answer to your question is: do your research before you go. Seriously. Look for a good job before you sign any contracts; don't just take a bad offer in the expectation of jumping ship later. |

I think it would go over pretty well, but you should list the name of your school and its address so we can get a better idea of whether or not the director is someone who would accept your request. Maybe you can try the following for a letter or speech:
"I really like you, I really like the school, and I really like the students. I am content working here. However, I am also a selfish and greedy jerk who isn't satisfied with everything you've done to help me over the past five months. Because my life is devoted to screwing people over to satisfy my own happiness I want to leave you without a foreign teacher at exactly the time when you could use one most. Since I have absolutely no respect for you, my signed contract, or the laws of Korea I was hoping you would write me a letter of release so that I can work at a new school. Yes, if I find another, better offer after joining this new school I will screw them over just as readily. I do this in my home country too.
Don't take this personally. It's not you, it's me." |

I think Mrsquirrel meant to say "E-2 visas are from chumps too".
Leave and take the better job. No probs |

i am on an E2 visa. i am able to give 30 days notice fro my resignation and i am willing to pay a reasonable amount for my ticket here as well as the visa run expenses.
my biggest concern is that my boss, being in a bit of a pickle if i leave, might say something along these lines:
"well if you want to leave , you have to pay me $6000 (or some other ridiculous amount) or else i wont give you a letter of release"
my actual flilght fees and visa run costs have not been disclosed so i think this is the card my employer might pull.

If you are so much of a big man why do you feel the need to lie to your boss? Tell him the truth.
With any luck we can have another amusing 'my boss shafted me thread'. DOn't forget to buy an ample supply of KY Jelly. |
