I was wondering how easy it was for people to make new friends and meet new people when they got to Korea. How many of you came to Korea not knowing anybody and how did you set about changing that? |

As you can see by the number of replies. Not very easy. |

A lot depends on where you live. Seoul is pretty attractive to foreigners, because it's easy to access western conveniences here. I find people here, both Korean and foreign much less friendly tho.
I lived in a smaller city last year, and found people much more friendly. Foreign people would stop to help anyone who looked a little lost, show them around and things. Korean people would stop and try to talk, with varying degrees of success. Some of that was motivated from a desire to learn English, but if they're cool people, then why not? |

Here is a great place to meet and make new friends in Kangnam:
http://nhm.sarang.org/new/about/location.asp
It's an all-English church service that meets three times a day on Sunday. Usually there are about 200 to 300 people in each service. Most speak English. About 30 percent are foreign -- the rest are Korean.
I have made my best friends there. |

I'd say that it is relatively easy to meet other foreigners in Seoul. I also lived in a smaller city for a few years (Ulsan) and found it easy to meet people there as well.
There are lots of different clubs, groups, and recreational activities in Seoul that will give you lots of opportunities to meet other foreigners. As far as meeting Koreans.....well that's super easy. You can hardly avoid it sometimes..... |
