I am looking for a budget hotel in Bangkok that is located near the BTS ( Sky Train ), central location, and near some attractions.

Any suggestions?

I bought the Let's Go Thailand book at What The Book and found it extremely helpful. I recommend doing your hotel and site searching in it.

Bangkok has to be one of the easiest cities in the world for travelling. Plenty of accomodations in all budget ranges.

If it's not peak season, I generally just show up and book a hotel at the airport (You can barter with them for cheaper prices) by telling them my price range, and areas I want to stay in.

Or if you're on a really cheap budget, (less than $15 a night) head for the Khao San road area and look around there. Plenty of places available.

Easy, Suk 11. Cheap, friendly, clean, and popular. Reservations are a must. 5 minute walk from BTS and slightly further to the subway. They have a website.

Miami hotel is two minutes from Nana BTS. It's a grotty dive but ok if you are out whoring.Five minutes walk from Thermae

Soi Nam Duplii is right next to Lumpini MRT station. THere are several hotels down there. The Pinnacle is one of them.

The Landmark is right next to Nana BTS as well.

Banyan Tree is five mintus from Silom BTS.

Search for discount hotels Thailand in Google and you will see a list.

I normally pay around 2,000B -3,000B a night in Bangkok for an ok hotel. I have stayed at the large hotel near Panthip (Watergate I think) got a deal there for 90 dollars a night that was a decent place to stay.

Here's a real tip for ya... The Baan Sukhumvit. They have a webpage, they're near the BTS, the owner, a Scot, will help you with anything ya need, free breakfast/internet, very friendly if that's a concern - ahem - and it's small, a boutique, not a big hotel. Location is near Soi 20 or so, close to Cowboy... Good part is that it's just off Sukhumvit by about 80 meters so it's quiet(er) too.

I always stay at the Hotel Reno. It is moderately priced ($20-$30 U.S., and up) and safe.

It is 1/2 block to the Stadium Sky Train station, and the MBK Center, as well as the rest of Siam Square. They have a swimming pool, and a good little restaurant mostly frequented by local Thais.

run by a german, 'livingstone's lodge'.

there are some 'working girls' who hang out at the bar though, so if you don't mind that -- then check it out.

Livingstone's looks quite pricey (over $55 U.S., on their website).

I wouldn't suggest staying in a medium priced hotel that permitted prostitutes in the bar. No slam on prostitutes- we all have to make a living- but it wouldn't feel so comfortable and safe, to me.

Unless that is what you are looking for. . . Cool

The hotel Reno that desultude mentioned a few posts above is on Soi Kasemson II. This Soi (street) has 6 or 7 budget hotels, a few budget restaurants and a lot of street seller food. The Reno being the more expensive hotel with more amenities. The White House Inn is the least expensive with small, clean room for $8-$12 - no TVs or hot water . There are good choices in between. The street is a budget enclave in what is otherwise a upscale / action part of the city.

To get to Soi Kasemson II take the Skytrain to the National Stadium stop. Leave the Skytrain stop using Exit 1 (the exits are clearly marked), and walk West (toward the 7-11).

Thanks for filling in the blanks. I have had good stays at the White House, also. I also have had many a meal from the street stalls- good grilled chicken, suasages, etc. I feel protective of that block- I have a feeling that, given the direction of the neighborhood (soaring), these places either won't last, or they will go upscale.

I have had a few drunken dunks in the Miami pool.

Grim place to stay but it was a place to stumble home to.

Ha..ha..ha. I swear to god I have thought the same thing. I guess I was feeling in a generous mood. The area is no secrete most regular Bangkok travelers know about itbut it has not reached the popular level of other famous areas (Suk, Khaosan).

A few more tips on the areaIf you continue to walk West about 400 meters on the main road were the National Stadium Skytrain stop is you will find a Tesco Lotus. A good place to eat and shop if you want to do the Western thing on the cheap.

If you go out the back side of the L shaped block and walk about 200 meters on the main road (just after you go over the canal bridge) there is a laundry shop were you can get laundry done for about price of the shops on Soi Kasemsonkeep walking and you will find a internet caf that is about price of the shops on Soi Kasemson keep walking and you will be at the Asia Hoteldirectly across the street is a cheap but excellent mo-ga-ta restaurant (spl.?- Thai barbeque restaurant.) 89 baht all you can eat.
