I was on the subway the other day texting people and when I got off I noticed my phone had gone missing Surprised

Some of my Korean friends called my number and said that some old dude had found my phone, knew I was a foreigner/gave a description of what I looked like(!), and wanted me to meet him to get my phone back- first at Yangjae Station, then Gangnam, then Yeoksam. Bitch took my phone!

I just want him to leave the damn phone at a 7-11 or somewhere PUBLIC as I have no desire to meet him but he is being a manipulative asshole and insists that I come get it in person. *beep* that, he can keep the damn phone, I'm only here for 4 more weeks, I'm not going to play his little game.

My phone is a card phone-do I need to do any canceling of service or anything like that? I assume the money will just run out soon enough.

Should I just let this slide, get my friends to send text messages/call at all hours of the night, or send in a ~*~big black man~*~ to go get my phone for me?

Sounds like you need to start learning a few Korean manners.

He's taking time out of his day to return your lost phone. Meet his demands and thank him. Come down to earth and learn a little respect. Also, it's customary to give those who have found your possessions a small reward - 10-, 20-, 30,000 in thanking them for their time and effort.

What the hell is this? Get the phone yourself or don't, but did you really want to admit to being intimidated by a haraboji? Shocked

My missus found a phone on the bus.

She tried to give it to the driver but he didn't give a toss (either that or it was the fact that she nearly twatted him in the face with her guide book)

She stupidly answered the phone and then gave it to me to speak to the woman. I can't speak korean and ended up with some woman whining at me to give her phone back.

Gave it to a man at the closest shop and walked off. If I had known I would have scored some cash i would have kept it.

So, how did he "take" your phone exactly?? Did you leave it on the subway, and then he "took" it because he realised you lost it? I know my cellphone has slid out of my pocket many times... luckily haven't lost it yet.

ditto. you need to be more clear. You mentioned he wanted to meet you at various places...what happened to the attempts??? If you want your phone back, meet the man. If you don't care then just let it go. No need to harass the man whos been trying to return it to you.

If you truly believe he took your phone and is leading you on a wild goose chase to recover it,
or for free English practice, then be upset. Don't meet him.

My son misplaced his phone in Korea, recovered by an adjeossi. He called an obvious choice from the Phone Book, 'Dad.'

He noticed all English on the phone and made a fair effort with broken English. With my broken Korean, we arranged a meeting.

Son & I ran down to the place where adjeossi was waiting patiently on a corner. We thanked him profusely, he bowed a lot and left.

Nice gesture considering he probably wasted an hour of his evening to help us out.

... and now he's wasting more time posting on message boards telling Koreans not to return foreigners' lost phones because foreigners are too cheap to offer a little money for the finder's trouble. Laughing
