I'm preparing to set off from the US for a contract with a small public school. However, I was just told that when I send in all the necessary documents, there will be no need to go abroad, all the processing will be done in Korea.

Is this right? I've seen a bit of conflicting info, and I want to be certain I'm not getting stuck on a tourist visa.

They are definitely right in saying that your visa can be approved without you needing to go overseas after you arrive in Korea. It is actually the best case senario that we all would like to happen for us.... And definitely not a problem in any way. They are telling you the truth...

What happens is that after you send the documents to Korea they submit them to immigration here in Korea and they check to make sure you meet the requirements of the E2 visa (which is the one for English Teachers here) ... And then give them a visa issuance number which they will then send to you. You then take that number and a few other things including the application form and your passport to your Korean Embassy or Consulate (or if you are not close to one you send it to them) and they will then put the visa in your passport after you leave it with them for a few days .... So you will actually have your visa in your passport before you leave for Korea ...

It is only people who have not got the visa in their passport already who need to go overseas to get the visa in their passport ...

Oh, nice. Thanks, I was fairly sure something was up one way or another. It'll be a bit of a detour, but that shouldn't be a problem.

With all the talk of visa runs and the difficulty of immigration anywhere, I was a bit afraid of confusion.
