What do single mothers with school age children do if they are working over here in Korea. Someone asked me what the possibilities are out there for them in terms of day care, being at their work place, costs etc...
I am not really sure.

What don't they DO? Having their kids ask you if their your new Dad the next morning is always awkward though.

From what I've seen they tap the rich vein of older female relatives to help them take care of their children. Unfortunately these older female relatives usually heap a load of shame and reproach upon them in return. So I guess that they are more obsequious in their day to day lives?

That is what they do.

My best friend here is a single mom. Basically her retired parents take care of her son during the day.

I am not a single mother but I do work. Our daughter goes to a Korean daycare and she loves it there!

Remember that women here have a network of relatives that can help them out with raising children. If they get desperate they can always move back in with their parents for free child care.

You are pretty much the only one who made sense in this thread. I don't know what the other guys were thinking. I was referring to someone coming from overseas and having a child and working. Is a Korean daycare affordable? One of my good friends has a child. Her daughter would go with her to her work and when the daughter was very young she would be the kindergarteners.

It's not bad - definitely much cheaper than the UK (where I am from) and elsewhere.

As with everything else, though, it depends on where you send your child. There are slightly cheaper places and there are more expensive ones. The one we put our daughter in is slightly upscale - the place is larger and they have more carers. The price for full time care (8.30-whatever time it is that you pick the kid up, latest is 8pm) is about 500K a month, they give a morning snack, lunch and an afternoon snack. If you require dinner, you pay extra. We only send Letty there from around 11 to 4.30-5, and we pay 320K, which is OK.

Seoul will be more expensive but everywhere else should be pretty similar to Daejeon, which is where I am.

I am comfortable with this arrangement because Letty is half Korean and as we will be leaving when she reaches primary school age, I feel that she should get more exposure to other Korean kids now, so that she doesn't forget half her culture... heh.

Yes Korean kindergarten is very affordable I pay $235/month my son stays there from 10am-5pm, lunch included plus morning and afternoon snacks..Teachers and kids are very nice and friendly..

My 5 y/o son used to cry whenever I leave him in the morning, but after few weeks he is very excited to go there, not only that it is fun, it is not only a daycare but they also teach math, science,english,etc...And the thing that I like best they serve healthy meal, you know that Korean food always serve with vegetables, now my son eats veggies Wink

We live in Seoul.

Do they speak exclusively Korea there? Does you son already know Korean, or is he learning it as he goes along? Very interested in your reply.
