"I don't like negro", said to me by a 1st grade Middle School student at my hagwon while he was looking at a picture of a black boy in his English textbook.

"I saw my father kill my mother. Then he jumped off a cliff and killed himself. That's why I live with my aunt." (and yes, her English was that good.)

I really hate gay people.

He was a uni student. He said it to me in my office.
My gay officemate happened to be there at the time.

Last year in my second grade class, I was doing a lesson on spiders. I showed them a pic of the Giant Bird-Eating variety, held next to a dollar bill for size comparison.

One student asks me, "How big is the dollar?"

I replied, "It's about the same as the Korean 천원 (chun-won)."

Another student raises his hand and said, "Actually, the exchange is around 949 won today." Seriously.

Yeah, I had a 3rd grade girl say something like that to me too. It totally threw me off guard. Turns out she used to live in Canada.

We were doing 'occupations', when a cheeky elemt. student said,

"My mother is a bomber."

I had a few thoughts.....

I don't remember my student's exact words, so I put the gist of it in non-Konglishized English. But her English is good and the meaning is the same:

Female high school student: "Please change the 'x' to a check for last class- I had a doctor's appointment." (referring to the attendance sheet)

Me: "What? If you're not here, I have to mark an 'x'. It's either that or a check, and that's only if you're here."

Student: "But I have good reason for not being here, and if I get an 'x' my teacher will yell at me and hit me."

Me: "Really? You should call the police. If you won't I will."

Student: "No, it's not serious. Not necessary" (she very lightly punches my arm to demonstrate).

(after some debate and many questions on my part about specifics):
Me: "If it's not serious then don't complain about it. The 'x' stays."

Should I call the police about it? She kept insisting it's very light "love" hits, but she does have a bruise on her arm.
Would it do any good? Perhaps more importantly, am I being a 'cultural imperialist'?
