Will the price of hard liquor come down after the FTA goes in effect? |

Good question.
In theory, it should. I'm told the total taxes, consumer tax, import tax, on whiskey is 120%!!!!! To even make whiskey available in Korea the exporters in Europe and North America have to sell it very cheaply to Korean importers.
But, unfortunately, I guess that when the FTA takes effect and there's no import tax, then the exporters will just adjust their whiskey etc price to what it should be.
Also, Korean distributers and retailers are unlikely to give customers a big price cut. When something is a niche market in Korea the retailers tend to put the price up if anything!! To try to make something on the few bottles they sell.
As a huge lover of whiskey, I really hope prices come into balance with the rest of Asia.......... Damn, even Japan is cheaper than Korea for whiskey!.........but I can't see it happening until the whole Korean import market becomes mature and the consumer more demanding......maybe another 10-15 years. |

Well I hope, at least, that the selection will just get better. I'd kill to drink things like Maker's Mark, Bailey's Irish Creme, Petron Tequila, Belvedere and Grey Goose Vodka, etc... |

You can get Bailey's in just about any bar in Korea, and Belvedere isn't too hard to come by if you know where to look.
Maker's Mark (God's gift to Bourbon lovers) however, is nearly impossible without a hookup on base. I've seen it at ONE bar in Korea, and it's a pretty dodgy place up on the hill called "Friend Bar". |

Don't know about the others, but Belvedere and Bailey's is definitely available here if you know where to look.
Oops. Missed seoulsucker's post. Just to add a little more content:
Try looking in Namdaemun market -- there's an underground portion where they sell all kinds of imported goodies, including alcohol. Songtan market also has some booze off-base. |

I can only assume you mean the proposed FTA involving the European Union, since that where most of the world's good alcohol comes from (Ireland, England, Scotland, Germany, Czech Republic etc). Unfortunately, that's likely to take a hell of a long time to come to fruitition - and that's assuming they agree at all. I suspect the American FTA deal, therefore, won't make a huge difference. |

JD, American micro (or middle)-brew beer, etc. There's SOME good alcohol made in the US, for sure. Are there any good Californian tequilas?
That said - yeah... a FTA with the EU would rule. |
