My officetel has a small boiler room in it and it's in the area of the apartment that faces the window (which in turn faces the sun). It's was blistering hot in there today, despite open windows, when I checked the gas meter. The pipes are cool to the touch now, there is still one wall next to the heater that is very hot and slower and harder to cool. What do you guys do during the summer months? Does it need a fan or extra care during the summer or will the cracked windows be enough?

The hot water will be shut off for two weeks soon, does that solve the problem for awhile? Does anyone know what date the hot water goes off? Did a site search, didn't come up with anything.

Has anyone seen anything remotely similar to this in Seoul:
http://www.instructables.com/id/E2L8GEGD13EP287W1X/ ?
I need them for my other windows, clearly need them in the boiler room.

WHY do they do that? They just shut hot water off everywhere for two weeks. How long have they been doing that?

Why do you need the boiler room to be cool? Does it affect the temperature of the rest of your apartment?

Some buildings turn off the hot water to do maintenance on the pipes once a year. But how can we know what date your building turns off the hot water??? Confused

To be honest, I'm not really sure what you are asking here.

Do you mean to say that your not getting cold water in your flat? Usually the water will cool down after you let it run for a minute or so. It may not get ice cold but it will be cool enough to shower or wash with.

Most everyone is experiencing blistering hot rooms during the summer months unless they have an air-conditioner installed. There isn't much you can do about it. It might help to install a screen on your windows which will stop the insects from getting in. If you leave them open at night it will cool down the rooms you, so that in the morning the heat won't be so bad.

If your worried about non-insulated pipes then they sell foam/fiberglass insulation to put over the pipes. You could even put a blanket over them if you wanted.

I don't need for it to be cool as much as I would prefer that it not get that hot again. It's position in the apartment allows it get superheated and it heats the walls around it, so, yeh, it affects the temperature in the rest of the apartment. I just don't want anything exploding in there. I know the pipes are probably able to take those extremes but there's more than pipes in there. I don't know if it needs more ventilation or if the ventilation system wasn't on but it was too hot to stick my head in for very long just to read the numbers.

As for the hot water thing, I was told it went off in all buildings across the country for two weeks. (Yes, this is my first year). It's only been off in my building for a few hours in the morning, every once and awhile.

Don't worry about your boiler. It can take extreme temperatures with no problem. Do what you can to keep your living space cool. Open windows, turn on fans, use A/C if you have it.

Actually, this is Summer. Your boiler should only be on when you take a shower or do dishes. There's probably nothing you can do to keep that side of your apt cool if it faces the sun.

Not all buildings turn off the hot water. In fact, unless the building is quite old (for Korea that's 10 years!! Laughing ) the boiler system and pipes won't need any maintenance.

It's funny that you have your own personal boiler in your apartment yet they are still going to shut off the hot water for two weeks. Usually, it's only older apartment buildings with a big centralized boiler who have to do that.

They were feeding you a line when they said the whole country's hot water is turned off for two weeks. It's only in your building. (And one I used to live in.)

I don't know what it is, in college it was all in the basement of the dorm and somebody else dealt with it. There are several things in there; the gas meter and a water pipe, something that looks like a heater, and a few other things. I've turned the hot water on and gotten no hot water several times so perhaps there is a central unit somewhere in the building. I do only use the hot water for dishes or the shower but I hadn't turned it on yet today and the room was still super hot.

I'll ask the office if I'm supposed to do anything about the room or anything in it other than read the meter. I don't think this building is ten years old yet, but I don't see any gapping holes on this side of the building where anyone else's 'stuff room' blew up, so I'll leave it at that.

Perhaps I heard them wrong. I stay in a separate building though and I've had a few days here and there with no hot water. I'm hoping they just do this as needed and not for a full two week stretch.
