|
|
Hi
Planning on teaching in Seoul in the not too distant future. Is it feasible just to bring a USB port storage device with 6gbs- instead of forkng out loads of dosh for a brand new laptop?
Or is it required as an essential communication tool/ teacher aid to have a laptop? (A must have)
Take it there are plently of cyber cafes (cheap ones) over there?
I guess each school is different but do most of you find that your school offers access to PCs? How technology dependentant would you say you are in your job?
Thanks Anyway

| Get your school to buy you a laptop, it's very common for them to do so. Mine got me a Mac-book Pro (apart from the desktops they provided me for my apartment and office) so I could check my emails between classes (not that my classroom doesn't have a computer, there's two teachers). |

Well, I think counting on your school to buy you a laptop is a bit questionable; it's not guaranteed at all. If there is one thing to living and working in Korea, its that one should try to be as self-sufficient as possible. Counting on others can be a set up for a let down.
Now, most schools have computers readily available with printers and large screen outputs and pc rooms are everywhere and super cheap. About 1,500 for an hour. So, having an external drive would be fine. That is all I have; an 80GB 2.5" USB drive with everything I need for any class, anytime.
As for my tech dependency, I am completely at the mercy of computers. I could, and indeed have on many occasions done without, but my portable drive is an extension of my being a teacher.
I have no laptop and see no need for one professionally. Yes, it would be nice and if I had one, I could make use of it. But is it imperative that I have one? Not at all.
Hope it helps and hope you arrive safely. |

| My public school would not provide me with a computer. Computers are hit or miss. Some schools give you an old computer they have laying around, others will buy you a new one. Mine, just said no. |

You mean a computer for your home? Well, yeah, that isn't part of any contract I have seen. PC rooms for off-work time, but I haven't seen a public school (or teachers room in a hagwon) that didn't have a computer for use. |

Hahaha....but correct.
My school gave me a computer for my classroom. One day, the hard drive DIED. Lost pretty much everything I hadn't printed out before. My school got me another computer. Then that one DIED. I lost more crap. I'm on the 3rd computer and have an external hard drive and back every fragment of info on my laptop and on the external harddrive.
Maybe if I had used my laptop from the get go, I wouldn't have lost anything since only the school computers imploded |

I am not really sure what you are comparing, a 6 gig memory stick/drive and a laptop?
If you are needing to work on the move then laptop.
If you need to move a file from home/PC bang to school then memory stick/drive |

LOL!!! In this case he sounds like he needs it, but usually I would not like a laptop either.
