I know there's a 'veggie club' lurking in thralls of this board but I was curious what you guys do for veggies here in Korea.
I love side dishes an my usuals are steamed broccoli and some kind of lettuce green. Marinated spinach, the kind you find on bibimbap wouldn't be too bad of a suggestion.
How bout your guys' ideas? |

I went to Karak market for the first time today. My god, gorgeous veggies.
Huge bags of red peppers for two bucks, parsley, beets, radishes and cilantro, and big surprise - domestically grown asparagus, bunches twice the size as Costco's, for half the price. Mmn... grilled asparagus.
I've also noticed that soybeans in the shell are starting to come into season. I usually buy a giant bag of them in late august, parboil them, and have edamame all winter as a "watching tv" snack.
I end up spending about 12 thou on taxis there and back, but the savings (and sheer variety available) make it worthwhile. You can also get there by subway on the Jamshil line.
When you get there, follow the ajumas with their wheely carts, or just ask for help. It's good to know the names of a few veggies you're looking for - if you only ask for one, they'll send you to the wholesaler - I suggest you list off celery, parsley, radish (same in Korean as in English) and go where they point. One giant alley with vendors on both sides, and piles of fresh stuff.
Now to go play with my new panini press. Mmn.. grilled red pepper, parsley and roast red onion pressed sandwiches with provolone. Tomorrow, gazpacho. |

I've only been there once - it was "inside" the market but not inside a building. It was 99% veggies. Fruit was outside on the main street.
Depending on where you are, I'd suggest bringing a trolley and giant backpack on the subway, loading up, and then cabbing it home. If you're too far away it means a friend with a car or more frequent trips.
If you're a serious foodie, you might be able to find a foodie K-friend for "language and food exchange". Every second weekend you use their car to go either to costco or the veggie market, and then spend the afternoon cooking up a giant lasagna or takdoritang... or showing how a nice hollandaise compliments fresh asparagus. Add a bottle of wine, and you have a party.
Another thing to do before fall is over is to fill up your freezer with blanched vegetables. I do that with beets, edamame, carrots and celery. It's nice to be able to throw handfulls of veggies into random food items. |
