Cannabis harm worse than tobacco

A single cannabis joint could damage the lungs as much as smoking up to five tobacco cigarettes one after another, scientists in New Zealand have said.

The research, published in the journal Thorax, found cannabis damaged the large airways in the lungs causing symptoms such as coughing and wheezing.

It also damaged the ability of the lungs to get oxygen to, and remove waste products from tissues.

Experts say the study confirms that the drug represents a serious health risk.

Between this and the increased psychosis study it's looking like the new vice of choice isn't as problem free as everyone was assuming. It doesn't negate the ridiculousness of most pot laws, but still...

Maybe folks need to start drinking tea for their buzz?

I think a joint is more harmful to the lungs than a cigarette as, generally, joints don't have a filter in them. Isn't this old news though? I recall hearing similar claims a few years ago...

It's pretty obvious to me. Still safer than alcohol though, which is known to cause a guy to dress up in a nun costume and pick fights with strangers.

Heroin, while addictive and having numerous adverse effects on the chronic user, causes no permanent organ or tissue damage. The belief to the contrary is a common misconception.

Although I am 100% against the prohibition of marijuana, the legalization lobby is full of bogus science and they're often every bit as clueless as the prohibitionists.

With my tolerance level where it's at these days, whenever I travel overseas and indulge, 2-3 pulls is all I need before i'm floating in liquid Bo-Bo Land.

A couple hauls is the equivalent of what? 1 cigarette? I can deal with that.

I'm skeptical of studies done by the government, especially in the age of prohibition. One must only look at the US funded studies under Bush about a variety of subjects.

I don't think it's a coincidence that these stories are comming out at the same time.

Yes, both provide useful information, however, there does appear to be a slant to the way each story is reported.

Quote:
However, in this study, people who smoked only cannabis were not found to suffer from emphysema, a serious and crippling lung disease which was previously thought to be linked to the drug.

And I have also never heard of a case of lung cancer directly liked to marijuana use.

Quote:
"It's important to remember, though, that tobacco continues to be more harmful overall because it is typically smoked in much higher quantities than cannabis."

If you're a chronic smoker, just purchase a vaporizor. Problems solved.

I agree cannabis has more tar than tobacco. At the same time, cannabis users are not seeking treatment for the alleged effects.

This is true, but I doubt anyone here is going to pay any attention to facts like that, judging by the 'quality' of most of the people on this board.

I heard this story about a guy who died from natural causes, no heart failure, cancer, or any other funny business. His wofe was talking to the doctor saying how this man as in perfect health: pink lungs, no artery problems. She was shocked because she said this man smoked two packs a day since he was in the army. Turns out they were non-filtered smokes he was pulling. The charcoal in the filters is terrible for you.

Also, my man's brother worked in the ER for a while. He said that 80% of the "lung doctors" ( I have no idea what they are called) smoked non-filtered smokes. This is all heresay, of course.

Irrelevant: I have been smoking Marlboro reds or Parliament Lights since I have been here, because my boyfriend smokes them. I am a Gauloises user, preferably the hand rollies, but since they aren't sold in the US anymore, I stopped smoking them...except when I order them online or go to France. A lot of the Korean smokes, I think, suck. I can deal with Arirangs from time to time.

Thorax is an awesome name for a magazine. It's also a great name for a heavy metal band. Who sings songs about pulmonary health.
