I am using a savings account at 농협중앙회 that a friend of my mother's had set up for me. I have been in Korea since early June on a C-3 visa. I have no ARC. I have some money that I would like to deposit. Most of it is cash, but some are in these 100,000W "checks". (WRT these "checks", I see a name on the front, but it's not mine, nor the person who gave them to me.)
Can I make a deposit at the ATM's at 농협중앙회, with both the cash and the "checks"? I do have a bank card and bank book, but the bank book is in my mother's friend's name.
If I have to go to a bank teller at 농협중앙회, how do I say, "I would like to make a deposit" in Korean? (I'm only a Level 1 student at Sogang. )
In either case, do I have to sign my name or anything on the back of the "checks"?
Talking to my mother's friend would be difficult, both because of distance and language. So I'm asking here. I'd appreciate any help.

Go to a KEB and talk to an English speaking teller. Maybe
you will be able to open an account in your own name. |

Why don't you have an ARC yet? Or are you planning to be in SK for less than 90 days?
You should be able to deposit that stuff into the bank account, no problems. I can't remember what colour the deposit slip is, but there are only about 3 different slips to choose from anyway. Just go to the bank, take a number and do your best.
Actually you could probably use the ATM to do it -- and in English as well. |

I'm thinking of studying at Sogang aswell, how is it there?
... Also I imagine I'd never be able to setup a bank account, unless I got a friend to do it. Even though my Korean is at rapidly increasing level. |

You can deposit the checks into an ATM, subject to a clearing time. |

Also, I don't see why you don't have your own bank account in your own name. You only need to show a passport to do this. |

I cannot just go to another bank and open an account because my mother's friend took the trouble in setting up one for me to use. I don't have an ARC because I'm only staying in Korea less than 90 days. I tried depositing at the ATM's at 농협중앙회, but while they have English instructions, there wasn't an option to deposit (only Withdrawal, Transfer Balance, and Balance Inquiry). I ended up going to a teller, and after apologizing for not being able to speak Korean, I said something like "저는 이 돈을 예금하고 싶어요," and was able to get it done, after feeling embarrassed (I get embarrassed rather easily).
PeteJB, as I've said, I'm only in Level 1, but Sogang's been great. I've learned a lot. I can't believe that the quarter is ending in 3 weeks (and then I return to the US the day after ).
