I had a university student tell me this today. He was serious. I asked him what he meant and he went on and on about how Roh promised the olympics in pyang chang, then Russia got it, then how the hostage was killed, he even threw in somethng about the soccer match with Iraq. He really thought korea was under some kind of omen. I asked him what he was going to do about it and he said korea had to clean their SOUL, whatever that meant. Maybe he meant clean the streets of seoul.

Damn, I was just going to make this joke. The city is filthy and could use a good cleaning.

Yeah... this was a university student. I was just in university less than a year ago and we had wacko's on my Univrsity campus. You had the PETA people with giant posters comparing KFC's treatment of chickens to that of Black Slaves.

Yeah, I'm dead serious. They had posters of chickens in a coop, and black slaves in the US and had a giant equal sign.

Then you had the conspiracy theorists who would not stop telling people that the government set 9-11. Its funny how these people say Bush is the biggest idiot on the planet, yet defend that he could be the mastermind behind an elaborate plot.

Point is, no other Korean I've talked to has said anything about "omens" or that its a "sign". The student you talked to obviously watches too many X-Files episodes on his computer between rounds of Sudden Attack.

you could alternatively suggest to your friend that these very same examples can be used to demonstrate how korea is gaining in "power" (perhaps stature/recognition would be a better description).

for examples:

1) losing the olympic bid can be attributed to the incidence of probability, where the dramatically increased number of bids by korean cities for hosting international events will inevitably lead to more number of bids being rejected. koreans can't expect to get em all.

2) the fact that koreans are even being taken hostage is an indication of something...
something that can't be easily described but which is something relatively new and which didn't occur even 10 years ago.
whether this is because koreans are traveling more or are being considered wealthier targets...both indicate an increased level of something...
beside i doubt abe (president of japan) would have any more influence on this matter, if japanese citizens were hostages in the same situation under similar circumstances (i.e. missionaries getting caught in the act).

3) lastly, and the best one, and which some people may find a bit crazy...
but i firmly believe all international sports/competitions at some intrinsic level are fixed and controlled for the benefit of international interests in politics, economics, etc.
there is just too much at stake in the modern era.
look at the match and the scenario it posed.
korea v iraq
they lose in penalty kicks
after a grueling 120 minutes of play.
this was the only conclusion that could've occurred with the most benefit and least harm.
iraq advances to the finals..hurray! who can be upset about that. especially worn torn citizens of iraq.
korea loses to penalty kicks. koreans are upset but oh well it was penalty kicks, so much chance... and if there is one country korea can lose to without losing face it would be iraq right now. koreans can consider brush it off as another charitable act on top of the soldiers on the ground in kurdistan.

more powerful countries losing to less powerful ones in sports matches, especially when there are direct power relationships occur all the time.
at least much more often than can be attributed to random probability.
australia lost to iraq. how many aussie troops are there in iraq?

if america ever played iraq in a sports match beleive me when i say they would lose.
now some may attribute these freak events to some karmic/divine balance/retribution, etc.

but by ockam's razor and simple rationality, it just makes much more sense to see these things are all fixed for greater reasons...economics, politics, trade and war...

Well that depends on you. Do you have "Ken Griffey Jr.'s Slugfest" for the Nintendo 64 and/or a pet hedge hog you mind parting with? I've been looking high and low for both and if you'd hook me up, i'd be more than willing to accept your opinion (after delivery that is).

In all fairness, the way humans treat other animals (especially livestock) is truely appalling.

Now I'm a meat eater so my opinion hold little weight.

But I've seen a few of those Peta videos and I can sypathise with that organization.

Now comparing animals to humans might offend people. However, at the same time I would gladly give up someone else's life if it meant protecting my dog back home. I love that little bastard.

Again, in all fairness, I don't believe that most of these people think Bush is directly behinf these conspiracies. He's just a puppet. I don't think any of these conspiracy people think he's a mastermind.
