|
|
So I'm trying to find my friend from France a PS3 console here and send it his way. But, I'm a Nintendo girl, so I have some questions. I went to Yongsan today and they were selling the Korean and Japanese versions.
1. What exactly do the different versions mean?
2. Are there different features in one vs. another?
3. Are the languages set?
4. Do they only read dvds/games from one region and not another?
5. Will it work in Europe? Is it a matter of changing the power/adapters?
6. Is there a chipped PS3 that will work in all regions?
Help! |

you don't want to buy your french friend an Asian PS3.
1. They are region locked. He would have to buy Asian games/movies to have them play.
2. There is no chip for it. Even if there were, Sony could easily upgrade the firmware of the PS3 like they do on the PSP.
Tell your friend to buy a european region PS3. |

The PS3 games are not region-locked, but the PS1 and 2 games are. Standard DVDs are region-locked. Blu-ray is also region-locked some of the time, although the regions differ from the games and standard DVDs.
How's that for confusing?
Yes, tell him to buy one in Europe. |

Not exactly the most knowledgeable post.
1. PS3 games are not region-locked whatsoever (so there is no need for a chip). Playstation 1 and 2 games are region-specific, but I most people willing to pay $500+ for a gaming system are not too worried about playing games that you can play on a $100, 8-year-old system.
2. As for using the PSP as an example... Probably the most easily pirated system in existence. No hardware necessary. It's called custom firmware. Yes, it works online. Yes, with every game.
That said, I would agree, buy it in Europe, UNLESS he has no interest in watching movies on it, because he could probably save a lot of money getting it over here (too lazy to compare prices myself though). |

Bah, I meant to say PS1/2 games region locked, movies locked but I condensed it to Asian Games/Movies. Minor Details.
The OP isn't tech savvy or else she would have already known these details about the PS3. I was trying to break it down to her in layman's terms.
Also with the PSP, don't you have to constantly upgrade/downgrade your firmware? Its been about a year since I've used a PSP. I got rid of it because I got sick and tired of having to mess with upgrading/downgrading firmwares and all that nonsense.
In my opinion, the NDS is the easiest available. You just drag and drop 3 files onto an R4 and pop it into your DS. I think you can do the whole process in under a minute with 2 clicks of your mouse. |

Alright. I guess I just think most people buy a ps3 to play ps3 games
I just updated my firmware maybe a month ago to 3.40oe, for the first time in about 6 months. Nowadays, that involves downloading an 'easy upgrader' usually created by someone other than Dark_Alex. I thought you had to have some special piece(s) of hardware to be able to use a DS as such?? I am not clear on anything about the DS, though... I use the PSP for subway Entourage etc. about as much as for games.
The only time I update is when there's a game that I want to play that requires a newer one than the one I'm on, and luckily this doesn't happen with anywhere near every update cycle. A good resource is: http://www.psp-hacks.com/category/55 that site's forums have good guides, as well. If you know what you're doing, check http://pspupdates.qj.net/ , but that's not very beginner-friendly usually. |

The DS is easier but you need a piece of hardware that plugs into the cartridge socket and takes a micro SD card. Very easy to use though and it works with everything. |
