|
|
So I have English camp on Monday, and my co-teacher is very bent on me giving the kids drawing lessons--- teaching them how to draw American/Western cartoon characters. I've cartooned professionally a little in the past, and can freehand a lot of the classic WB and Disney characters.
So, what western characters are popular with korean kids, besides Mickey and Bugs? What Japanese ones, for that matter? I'm in rural Korea, are kids here less aware of American animation than they would be in Seoul? I'm particularly trying to find popular characters with catch phrases, so I can incorporate some writing or speaking into this. |

They still like Pikachu and Atom and Doraemon, plus all the movie superheroes. Spiderman and Batman are especially easy to sketch quick, I find. |

Just the other day on Korean TV I saw a Tom and Jerry where Jerry puts on blackface and dances around like an African tribesman. Ah, good ol' fashioned family racism^^ |

I'll practice them a bit over the weekend, good call.
Billy--- old skool cartoons are great for blissful, candy-coated racism. Have you ever seen Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs? http://youtube.com/watch?v=YUoLDqXF_EY
Brought to you by Bob Clampett, the man who created Tweety Bird. |

Yer on DrunkDuck, eh? Being a Modern Tales/ Graphic Smash/ WebcomicsNation guy myself, we will have to fight to the death.
Anyway, here's what I've found over the years.
From the US: Superman, Spider Man, Batman, Wolverine (only the movie version), Hulk, Tom & Jerry, Popeye, Looney Tunes, most all of the Disney properties, and StarCraft.
From Japan: Dragonball, Doraemon, Pikachu, Sgt. Frog (Keroro), maybe some of the Digimon, Crayon Shin-Chan (Jjang-gu), Naruto, One Piece, Super Radical Gag Family, Slam Dunk, and Super Mario.
And, I think teaching them this dialog...
Would be pretty awesome |

Japanese...I'd go with Naruto, Inuyasha, Jjangoo (aka Shin Chan) and Doraemon
Naruto
He's the character in orange.
Inuyasha
Jjangoo or Shin Chan (Japanese title)
I found far more image hits on google under the name shin chan, so that should help you.
Doraemon
All images were found through google, so you should be able to find plenty of picture options. I am such an anime geek but it came in handy for once! |

I totally forgot Inu Yasha.
And... Detective Conan ("Case Closed" in the US)
GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka, and Death Note (especially Death Note) may get the attention of the older students.
And if you're feeling silly, Sailor Moon is also well-known. |

William--- I just checked out some of your comics. Nice work. THe main other Modern Tales guys I know ae Mark Campos and Drew Weing; I've been in some anthols and APAs with 'em. Also, just read your blog. Have you been published in New Zealand? I was in the last issue of Pictozine, which claims to be New Zealand's biggest comics anthology.
Yeah, Drunkduck is lowbrow, the poor man's version of Graphic Smash, Modern Tales and the like. I've been thinking of putting one of my more artsy fartsy projects up on Webcomicsnation, or Modern Tales, if they'll have me.
I've gotta teach 'em some of that dialogue. Did Frank Miller write that? The art looks like Jim Lee, what with its vaguely homoerotic sheen. |

Is Family Guy actually popular here? Haven't seen it around much. I always figued it was too pop-culture laden to go over well outside of the English-speaking world. |

Yes on both counts. All Star Batman and Robin. I find it to be one of the most sickly entertaining comics being made by DC right now. |

I'll have to check it out. Miller's really morphed into an over the top hypermacho superpatriot (he actually did a batman al-quaida comic with the line "I'll show those clowns what terror really is!"--- DC cancelled it.), He's kind of the John Wayne or Lee Marvin of comics. Or maybe just the unintentional Jeff Foxworthy of comics. Jim Lee, with his ubercommercial sales frinedly look no doubt makes for a comic that's pretty damn strange and wonderful. |
