I've told my school that I want to continue working with them through the first semester of next year. My contract will finish at the end of next February, but they want a teacher who can commit to the entire school year. I've told them that I will only sign on for the first semester, and if they aren't willing to accomodate that then I'll move on. I figure I have four choices:
1) Try to find a public school that will let me teach for one semester
2) Work in a hagwon (which I DON'T want to do)
3) Get a tourist visa and teach privates (obviously the money would be better, but I don't wanna risk it)
4) Find another public school and sign for a year, but quit after the first semester

My school's by no means perfect, and they have not been very easy to negotiate with, but I would like to continue working with them, as well as the same students. Anyone have any advice?

I'd ask again. The schools in my area have extended contracts by one semester with no problem.

I've asked them at least 3 times already but they claim that it will create too much paperwork for the school administration since the school would only use 1/2 of the money that GEPIK would provide. They must think they can get a teacher quite easily.

I suspect it has to do with funding and penalties the school will have to pay if they receive funding for a year for you, but can't find a replacement when you leave. It might be better for them to not have a foreign teacher at all. Funny, the way these things are.

I don't get it. Yesterday the principal kept asking me to stay for another year, but since I can only commit for 6 months then I'm not needed. I'll continue to wait and be on the lookout for other jobs

If you don't plan to stay in Korea after the six months..... Sign for another year.... Have a family emergency at the six month mark.... It might look a little suspicious since you already stated you only wanted a six month contract, but it should work.... Especially if you "miraculously" hand them a replacement when you leave (ie find a replacement on the low down)... Of course that only works if you have a decent school someone else would want to work at....

I am hoping that my school does not change my contract to one semester when I show up with my mohawk do.
