Is the number on your ARC card the same as the one used for medical insurance? My boss hasn't given me my medical insurance card yet and says I can use my ARC card. Thanks for any info. |

It can be used but often a hakwon boss says that when he has not enrolled you and you just pay the full freight at the doctor and don't know any better.
A basic visit to a clinic with insurance is 3000 won.
Details of costs, co-pay percentages, etc can be found on the NHIC website.
http://www.nhic.or.kr/english/faq/sub03/eng_faq_insurance.html
and their main English page is here:

Your ARC is not your health insurance card. Your boss should have gave you a little paper 'book' (it can fit in a guys wallet) to show that you have health insurance. |

If you DO have the NHIC booklet, you are covered, and do not need to carry it around. Your ARC will suffice at the doc's office, they'll have all your insurance info in their computer system.
But odds are you aren't enrolled if you haven't gotten the booklet. |

Sconner,
Hi. As I understand it, you are at a new job and you've been back in Korea for less than 2 months. If you got your ARC right away and then your boss signed you up for insurance right away it still means a couple of weeks passed by. So, probably your boss signed you up for health insurance less than a month ago. Am I guessing right? So, it takes a little while for the National Insurance workers to process everything and send out the little booklet. You could very well be covered and if you are you can just use your ARC and the hospital, clinic or whatever can look you up to see if you're covered.
So, don't panic. It sounds OK. It sounds like you're covered. If not, you'll know soon. The insurance booklet should come within a few weeks, but sometimes it takes a month or two to get the first one.
Welcome back to Korea. I hope this job works out well for you. |
