I often socialize in Itaewon. I usually have a good time there with my friends. As it turns out, most of the time I drink Korean beer, which comes in a pint glass, and is reasonably cheap. OB is drinkable, but occasionally I crave a good IPA beer as a treat. You get a richer range of flavors, and I like that variety. I did go to one of the beer festivals in May and it was fun. Has anyone had good experiences with IPA beers or tried to make their own?
When in Itaewon, I usually go for cheap stuff. But I occasionally would go to some place up near Haebancheon, closer to Namsan, to get a pint or two of IPA beer, even though it cost 8000 won for a pint. It was nice to try these different tastes, which I miss sometimes.
You can imagine my surprise when I went back to the place in Haebancheon after not being there for 2 months. I went in, and asked for my pint of Moon Bear IPA. I PAID 8000 won, and they gave me a wine glass of beer, rather than a pint.
"IS THAT ALL?" I asked, incredulously. I told the staff I was not coming back.
Since more pubs sell IPA beers out of a wine glass, I am now starting to wonder whether it would be cheeper, or better or more fun to make my own? Has anyone tried to brew their own beer in Korea? Was it fun? Did you enjoy the results, or was it a disaster? I look forward to your replies. Cheers. |

Hmmmm...I don't think I recall any Korean beer winning any kind of medals for...anything. Well, perhaps for "insigificance"...or "pure shit".. I remember mentioning Korean to some seasoned travelers, back home...they laughed.
Pretty soon...Korea will claim IPA as its own.
Yes...make your own...why not? |

Well, while I am perfectly happy to drink OB or red rock with my friends and acquaintances in Itaewon on a Saturday night, at times I do crave something different. I used to really enjoy treating myself to alternative beers, or IPAs, such as I tried in a nice pub I went to in Bundang, or in Gwangju(when I lived down south). They were more expensive, but the quantity was the same. What I got this year-a wine glass of beer for 8000 won-was an insult. So, I have gone back to OB.
For the record, I did investigate home brewing in this country. I went to a specialist store in Seoul, and they said I had no choice but to buy the huge 6 gallon carboy for brewing beer (or wine, or mead), and I bid the staff farewell! That was one humungous container! How was I going to carry it onto the subway?
In fact, I found glass jars the other day at a lower price that would serve just as well. Will I make my own beer here? We'll see. I used to make wine and mead in the U.K. |
