Classes at my public school start tomorrow but I was told that if I really don't want to work I don't have to.
Why do they even ask me? Is this a test? I like my job, but who wants to work if they don't have to? |

| They're probably having an assembly and then just killing time. It wouldn't be a bad idea to show up for opening assembly and put in some face time, and then just go home if nothing's happening. |

| The assembly is supposed to three hours in the morning. If I have classes afterwards it'll probably just be free talking about what the kids did over the summer break. If I go there's not much of a chance of sneaking away later. |

With the public school jobs sometimes doing something you're not required to do will score you points for down the road. This might amount to extra vacation time or an easier time recontracting. |

There could be a 100 different reasons why they asked you instead of just telling you to stay home.
Its just up to you to go in or not. If you DO go into work, you'll probably be sitting in your office the entire day doing nothing. The homeroom teachers are gonna be busy getting these kids into school mode after the break. The last thing on these kids' minds are "Hey, lets go hang out with the English teacher." |

At my school today it was actually almost business as usual from 2nd period. The Assembly took up until a while into 1st period and then they had some homeroom time and then classes as normal from 2nd period.
The only problem that I had was that I had managed to go through the whole vacation certain that the first day of classes was going to be Monday 27th ... I am still convinced that is what I was told ... and because most of the teachers in over the last couple of weeks don't have lots of English and I can't read the notices ... I did really think I had 2 more days this week to finish my planning ... So I actually had no one lesson that was totally ready ... I did actually manage to get confirmation at 10 to 9 that it was classes as normal from 2nd period ... And a period to get a lesson actually ready to go ... What made it a little bit worse for me today was that today is the one day in the week where I normally have 4 lessons straight (with just the between lesson breaks) ... It did actually go ok ... and by the 4th lesson today I was happy with the lesson ... With good use of every spare moment between them ...
I couldn't have gone with just a let's talk about vacation lesson because it just would not work for 45 minutes with our classes ... and I did also very much want to start the term as we intended to keep it going ...
Does everyone else have a few quiet days before things go back to normal ? Or do you just get into it straight away as mine did ?

My elementary school was supposed to start on the 27th but today I found out from one of the parents that opening day will be the 29th instead. All it will be is opening ceremony and they will send the kids home. Oh well, two more days of working 9-12:30.....  |

My schedule was rearrainged at the last moment today, too. In a couple of classes the student weren't really into it at all. I think I was a bit more enthused to be starting again then they were. |

I told my managing coteacher I really didn't want to go in. She seemed absolutely fine with it. She said that it was probably going to be bit hectic because of the shortened schedule and hyper kids.
I've heard that several schools are starting later this year because of unseasonably hot weather. Has anyone else heard this? |

It was in the newspaper today that some (maybe all?) Daegu schools will extend summer vacation because of the heat. They'll shorten winter vacation to compensate.
And at my last public school, for the first week classes resumed in September, I had no classes. The last week too of the semester. I still had to be there, but it was still pretty sweet. |

Showing up and letting the parents see you would be a good idea. |

| I will,of course, attend but there will be no parents there at all. The principal will speak for 20 minutes or so, they will sing the school song and the kids will head on home. The teachers will go to lunch and that will be it. Thursday will be class as usual. |
