My husband and 16 month old daughter are living in korea for a year. We recently have discovered that our daughter seems to have a mlk allergy, or at least intolerance. to dairy products. We have tried giving her glasses of milk and she wakes with awful stomach aches. Does anyone have ANY idea what else I can give her for calcium? I tried some soy products but they are packed with sugar. I also tried lactose free milk, but it had the same ill-effects as regular cow's milk. I'm at a loss and don't know what to put her on. I know Korean mothers often give their babies vegemil or a powdered drink (that is mixed with ground vegs, grains etc.) I want to keep it as simple as possible, knowing we will go home in just over 6 months. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!!

I'm no expert, but I was very allergic to milk as a baby and kid.
I was given Similac (tm.) I'll never forget the taste and smell. Not nasty, just distinctive.

If your kid is too old for breast feeding then the only reason for milk is the calcium. Calcium can come from other sources and don't forget some vitamin D to increase the intake. Feed her fish with bones and send her outside in the sun.

Is your daughter allergic or just lactose intolerant?
I noticed you tried lactose free milk. Maybe there's a psych issue. The regular milk made her sick so she got sick when she ate the lactose free milk. Maybe she just doesn't like milk. How does she do with ice cream?

The ability to digest milk sugar after childhood is a special adaptation that is found mostly in people of European decent. Most people in the world are lactose intolerant. But lactose intolerant people can handle small amounts of milk with no problem. There are some drops you can take with dairy products to provide the proper enzyme. Most lactose intolerant people just limit themselves to the occasional small serving of ice cream.

Lactose intolerant people should be able to eat cheese and yogurt with no problem, but I'm sure my vegan friend will tell you to eat no animal products at all including all dairy products.

There is also acidophilus milk and soy milk.

Kale is a very healthy vegetable with lots of easily-digestible calcium.

Not ALWAYS there, but we've found goat milk quite regularly at our local E-mart.

I have seen goat's milk, but it is rather expensive. People often tolerate goat's milk more than cow's milk. And I don't think you can find soya milk that is without sugar. In China, you can definitely find that, not here. I frankly tolerate sheep and goat's milk cheese better than cow's milk cheese. I read somewhere that goat's milk chemically is similar to mother's milk. How old is this kid, anyway?

thanks for the replies!
Well, I spent a great deal of time in E-Mart yesterday and although there was no goat's milk this time, I did find the similac that was mentioned. It says it is a nutrional milk formula for older babies and toddlers up to age 2. Gave it to my daughter last night and she slept great, so it must be okay!

I will check for the goat's milk again though. I'm curious.
