I want to ship a new Garmin GPS here when
the new high sensitivity models come out.
What tips do you have? I've already heard take it out
of the original packaging.
Someone else said USPS is less likely to open it.
Should we just not mention it on the form?
Should we pretend it's a calculator? |

My parents shipped me my saxophone a few months ago. It went through US customs and got held up at Korean Customs. All they did was send me a lform that asked me to declare the value of the item. I said it was used and it was $99. A couple days later it arrived.
First off, say its a GPS reciever. Say its used and a gift. And also say its $99. |

Dare I ask what the saxophone was really worth, or at least what it cost new?
In other words, does customs make any effort to find out these things?
My impression is they aren't interested in used personal items not for resale, but I could be wrong.
I sure would like a simple hiking GPS. Funny they don't seem to have them here, at least not in the chain stores, or even the hiking outfitter stores locally - or even online in Korea. And some of the non-Korean websites say their GPS are not for export.
I suppose some countries might be a bit touchy about their use, after the hijackers used them to fly planes into buildings on 9/11. But this makes no sense, of course.

My saxophone is easily over $1600 new. Used, probably around $900. How much did I declare it for? $99. |

Thankfully, I have never had a package of mine opened. I have used Fedex, UPS, and USPS (though USPS is usually cheaper and easier). I have even had stuff in the box sent to me (my recently built computer). However, I stated on the box that it was used. No problems.
Make sure that when you send it. SOmeone places it in another box so as to make it look used. Also, on the form, write 'used _____________' and insure it. You should have no problems. |

Now my mother is asking me questions.
Can she insure it for $250 and put that it's only worth $50 on the customs form?
Should I have her say it's a calculator. It has a calculator option. It's a calculator with GPS. |

mothers ALWAYS cause problems when they try to help
1. the USPS won't let you insure for MORE than it's worth and
2. that would raise red flags in my book if I was Korean customs |
