there's this consortium of vegetable truck guys who assail my neighborhood at 7am EVERY MORNING.

there's about 4-5 trucks and one guy who walks around the apartments hawking with a megaphone in this ridiculous robot voice.

the yangpa truck parks under my window at 7:30 every day. "yangpa.yangpa imnida. yangpa imnida..."

and megaphone guy strolls around mashing out this unintelligible (even to koreans) gobbledygook.

i've asked yangpa truck guy on numerous occasions to be quiet before 9am. he says "ok" but then does it AGAIN the next day.

i go out and ask him to be quiet and say "why every day? why? why do you do this?"

and then i track down the megaphone man and do the same thing. "why? why every day, early morning? why?" and he apologizes in english "ok, i am sorry. i understand." and so i thank him and walk off.

no sooner have i turned the corner to go back to my abode and he starts up AGAIN with his robot-voice. i return and say "why?!? why again?"

"oh sorry. i understand" but i ignore him, reach into his truck and grab his megaphone and walk away. he doesn't really react, i expected a shrieking harangue like "shipsekki, give me back my robot voice machine!" but nothing.

so i stuffed his megaphone in a nearby recycling bag and kept walking.

it's quiet now, but i'm giggling too much to go back to sleep.

You're a hero in your mind because you stole someone's property?

no, i'm a neighborhood saint because everyone, even the koreans, tell these guys to shut up DAILY. we have tried politeness, rudeness, more politeness, and even threats of police action (this involves photographing their license plates, which makes them really nervous).

if we're going to talk about theft, then let's discuss the amount of sleep these neanderthals have stolen from me.

Hold on there partner, the game is not over yet. DID you ever see the movie THE ONION FIELD, about the cops body they found murdered. Do not count that guy out, I would not be surprised to read:

TEACHERS BODY FOUND IN ONION FIELD

Yesterday a large male body found in onion field. Mr.Kim who sells onions was booked and released after confessing to the murder. The victim was a large white male who continued to harass the poor onion seller.

They're breaking the law first. You're not supposed to use loudspeakers in public without permission. They're simply causing noise pollution. I suspect many Koreans wouldn't miss them one bit if they were gone.

Good one, OP.

sounds plausible, had i actually harrassed the guy.

a more believable corollary to this story, if you're talking about ONION AJOSSHI REVENGE is "whole neighborhood destroyed - 2412 bodies found in onion field. mr. kim killed them ALL because not a single one of them enjoyed his morning megaphone crooning."

I don't understand why they need those speakers when selling in Korean cities.

Do Korean housewives come running out of the house "Oh, great. The cabbage guy is here!" Very Happy

I seriously doubt that.

In the countryside where the nearest supermarket could be far away, loudspeakers make more sense.

There's your mistake, talking about sense, it's like logic isn't it!!!!!

If it's against the law, can you actually call the cops?

I have a digital camera. If I threatened to take a picture of them and their license plate, would they go away?

I hate those guys. Good on you, OP.

It is kind of a traditional thing. Back in the day when there were no Lotte Marts, cars, subway systems, etc. people relied on these guys for their food supply.

Maybe they're the last of a dying breed? I don't see any young bucks taking up the call, so hopefully after this last generation keels over you'll see a significant drop in their numbers.

Comparative advantage, Korea. It's time to drop the plow and pick up the soldering irons and welding gear.

Yes. I think they'd better continue trying to make good mechanical things like cars, motorbikes and manufacturing machinery. There's no future in driving around a fruit truck (especially with the price of gas going up).
