Well,

My school just had a fire drill. My first in Korea since this is my first time in the public school system.

It was in a word: whacky.

First they announce on the PA that we are having a fire drill then the bell goes off. Everyone sort of shuffles into the backyard through any route of their choice.

Once everyone is in the backyard standing around randomly and playing in the trees just beyond, the fire truck pulls up. A few more stragglers come ouf of the school followed by someone with a fake injury in a stretcher.

Then the smoke bomb on the roof gets set off by one of the teachers milling around up there (there are quite a few). The yard fills with smoke to the cheering of the students. The firetruck opens fire with a water cannon and blasts the smoke bomb and the school. The students scream and cheer!

There is a podium set up in the backyard. The principal and some others make some announcements. Students from each year come down to where the "firefighters" have set up some hoses and take turns spraying them around and generally trying to soak their teachers.

By this point people are walking in and out of the building as they please. The high school students from next door are walking through the school to get to the cafeteria and the entire scene is more or less chaos. Everybody shuffles back into the school.

While maybe not as practical as a fire drill back home as I remember them, it was far more entertaining.

Anybody else experience one of these?

Oh yes. We had one last year. All the kids took great care to shield their faces from the smoke, keep down low, and move to the classroom exits where they formed a patient queue and put on their shoes before proceeding to the playground.....

If there had been a fire no one would have survived. Shocked

the one class that did get out quickly without shoes got yelled at by the Principal for not wearing their shoes....
