| How far is it from Taipei to Kenting beach? Thanks. Also, who's gone to Taipei and Kenting and how were they? |

Kenting is a good long day's drive. I drove it - so I can't say how long a bus, or a train to Kaoshiung then bus would take to get there. Kenting is great - far better than any beach in Korea IMO.
The whole east coast is beautiful and don't miss the Toroko Gorge. Very worth driving it all. If you drive all the way around the island it takes about four days if you take your time and look around a bit.
I also love Taipei - I lived there for two years - plenty to do - far more relaxed than Korea. |

I did it last year. Take an in-country flight for sure. It's cheap and very fast, but you still have to take another bus for about 1 and 1/2 hours to get there.
Hotels are dirt cheap there. |

Can you take a day trip to Toroko Gorge from Taipei?
I plan on being in Taiwan for only four days, but I would like a chance to take a day trip outside of the big city.
If Toroko Gorge is too far away could you recommend any other places just outside of Taipei for a day trip? |

I just got back from Taiwan. Taroko Gorge is definitely too far for a daytrip. It's like 3-4 hours by train I think??? Check on that though.
For day trips I did:
1. Yangmingshan National Park (north of Taipei). Really beautiful if you're into hiking
2. Wulai Hot Springs (south of Taipei). It's an easy day trip.
3. Juifen (near Keelung). I stayed overnight there. Really nice. |

Agreed. Kenting is nice, Baisha (sp?) which is outside of Kenting town is the nicest beach. If you can't drive you coul take the bullet train from Taipei to kaohsiung and bus from there. The buses in Taiwan are great, they have the latest movies and some even have video games in big reclining chairs. There is enough in Taipei to do 2 days of sightseeing and some shopping. Taroko is better if you have a couple days though, a day trip probably isn't worth it. And yes a drive around the island is definatley worth the trip esp on the east coast. Maolin and Yushan are also good trips to make in Taiwan as well. Tainan is probably the second most interesting city as well.
Oddly in Taiwan, Buses are easily the most comfortable way to travel. If you wanna go from Taipei to kenting I would take the train from Taipei to Kaohsiung and bus from there. The train station is located centrally in Kaohsiung and the bus companies pickup sites are a short walk from the train station. |
