Hey bike experts, I gots a question for you.

Preface: 3 days a week I ride about 30-40 minutes to work on my 50cc delivery guy scooter. It's mostly streets, not speedways, but there are stretches where I constantly ride at max speed for minutes at a time.

Question: Can a 50cc scooter handle this kind of stress? What kind of maintenance do I need to keep up on the bike, aside from adding oil?

Valediction: Thanks, Q.

Yes, it sure can. It's often harder on them to sit and idle on hot pavement for a long time, given that they are air-cooled, usually.

Remember, some 50cc bikes are 2-strokes, and need oil as well as gas. Four-stroke bikes don't need the oil/gas mix.

I think these Korean "City" bikes are virtual copies of Honda Cubs, which have been around since the 50's. There is currently a documentary on the Discovery Channel where the Cub was rated the #1 motorcycle of all time. They actually drained the oil and refilled it with used vegetable oil from a fry vat, and it ran fine.

You should change the oil every 500km. No point in using more expensive oil if you do this.

You should also change the oil filter (just a few thousand won extra) every 3rd oil change. Depending on your model, make sure the air filter is cleaned or changed every 6 months to one year. If you have a belt-driven scooter, and you hear a very loud/sick grinding noise, you probably need a new belt. The first time I heard that, I thought for sure my engine was a goner, but it was nothing. Cost maybe 30,000 for the new belt, and that belt will last a couple years or longer, depending on how much you ride.

Much obliged~

I should probably look into getting the oil and air filters changed. Haven't done it at all in the year that I've driven the bike, though I didn't really drive it all that much until recently.

I would recommend just going down to the twegyero (퇴계로) area. Maybe someone has specific directions, since I don't, but around there are a million bike shops. It's probably the best place for selection and, because of the competition, prices.

Try a little vehicular sodomy now and again, as per your other thread.

If you're always riding it at top speed the engine isn't going to last as many years.

If you get into biking then 50cc ain't gonna keep you happy for long. You'll probably get a bigger bike before that 50cc gives out.

When those scooters blow, they usually take your *beep* off.

For someone looking for a 50cc scoot I can recommend Taiwanese Kymco Agility 50cc 4-stroke scoot. I got mine couple months ago and have basically nothing to complain about. For sure it could go faster and accelerate faster, but I don't have any major problems keeping up with the traffic.

I'm surprised how a mere 50cc can go 70-80 kph even against little wind. I loose some speed climbing up bigger hills, though. I think that the speedometer is pretty accurate: when I'm driving 70 kph cars go as fast as I do when they aren't obviously speeding. Engine is quiet and I don't have to hassle with adding oil all the time as it has 4-stroke engine, and thus there's no black smoke trailing me either.

I got mine from Uijeongbu store. They advertised in passo.co.kr and asked KRW 990 000 for a new one (2006 model). The price dropped to 900 000 by asking them to lower the price. I saw them sell these at the "motorcycle street" in Seoul. Mine is black but otherwise it looks like this.

I think I have the same scooter. It's got some kind of decal on it, though. ATX or some such.

Actually, I hate that scooter. It's so ugly and embarrassing to ride. I cannot tell you how many times I've gotten passed by two dudes doubled up on a pink scooter. That really sucks. When I go through Namsan 2 tunnel, I hold up traffic because I can only got 70 and people want to fly through there. Going up a hill I sometimes wonder if it's going to just stop and and roll backwards, or topple over on me. When I cross the Han river on a windy day, I wonder if I'm going to be pushed over by the wind bursts.

Definitely do not like this bike, compared with others. For the price, I wish I'd have gone with something a little faster and sexier. I feel like I need to carry around one of those big metal delivery boxes when I drive this thing.

Yeah, I hope to be trading this thing in pretty soon. I met a guy who had the exact same scooter as mine. He got 400k trade-in for it and paid an additional 500k, ended up with a 125cc cruising bike. Sounds like a good deal to me. I'll probably be doing something similar in a month or two.

I haven't seen that many 50cc Agilitys in Korea. Actually only one so far. The letter combination ATX doesn't ring a bell. If ATX is actually ATS, I think your scoot might be Korean made Daelim Major ATS.

When I was looking for a ride I looked at Major ATS as well, but decided to go for Kymco because Kymco has 4-stroke engine and Major has 2-stroke. No need to play with oil, no smoke, quieter and the engine has more torque... not much but helps at maintaining speed!

maybe time for an upgrade??

how about a 100cc, i have one as a second bike (yamaha cuxi 4 stroke). very small profile (great in traffic), disc brake and looks good, oh and as it's light and a 100cc takes me over 100, plus accelerates faster than a lot of other 125cc scooters and bikes.

heaps of fun.
