Need a change?

http://soompi.com/forums is a forum for English speaking fans of Korean music and is many times larger than this one.

Unfortunately a lot of the discussion involves things like

Quote:
i was about to kill someone ...cuz i thought it was son tae young too..and like joo young hoon hae SUCH A HARD TIME AFTER SHE BROKE UP WITH HIM and if that guy had broken up with her to be with that krn model..i woulda KILLED SOMEONE~!!!

and lots of that really annoying h4x0r lingo and dubious shift-key control: "1 4m w4y 2 133t 4 U aNd WiLL OWn U f4g0t", for example.

but... there are separate forums for philosophy/religion, current events, relationships, plus there are a lot of file-sharing links, information on how to get copies of korean movies with English subtitles, translations of lyrics, all that.

couple of English teachers i know post there regularly

check it out! woo weeee!

Yes even a fly is offendered enough to delete the site from his favourites list after one visit. Moderators do come in handy even if they do try squating flies every so often.

Well, the Korean music fans over at soompi have found out about ESL cafe... check out what they have to say about us at

http://soompi.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=6&t=63476&s=17120ab5011b0d015b4e3a295168f35a

To soompi users who read this,

1. yeah, leetspeak isn't used much at soompi. I just like writing leetspeak and never get a chance on this board, so any excuse

2. sorry about jajdude and his "I'm a racist" thing. Not many of those here, and we're not big fans of them

3. Joon, sorry about icon dissing your avatar... I think it's the best Very Happy

4. Anda is over 50 and wears a tinfoil hat. Not the soompi target user group.

gang ah jee:

I hope you haven't been trying to incite a forum-war ("look what they're saying about us over there!!" - posted on both forums within a couple days of each other... hmm..) - As "sweetyluv" said on that board, "hey guys just a note. let's not get into bashing other forums... forum wars are no fun". Sensible words.

The two groups come at things from opposite angles and experiences with regards to Korea and its culture are in no way shared. Here's a quote from one poster in that thread :
Quote:
from what i gather, most of them are white guys who, used to being the top, are now experiencing their first tastes of racism. and they are most bitter about it.
Thus, this is a gap that can't and won't be bridged. Only bad can come.

However, your crack about Anda's tinfoil hat *is* funny. Smile

That's it. I'm going to try to get myself renamed to The Flyswatter. Glad I thought of it before that county-fair baboon!

Thanks, Anda!

Yeah, sweetyluv's a voice of reason. Seriously, I'm not trying to start a forum war, and it wasn't me who posted this thread on soompi. I'm actually a bit worried about this becoming a hassle for the mods here if the soompi users get angry.

I posted the link to here because I thought they had some interesting things to say about some things on this forum.

Sorry if anyone's been offended (too much)

Hello, Soompi member Ken8589 here. Smile

Yeah, I kinda see where you're coming from about the leet-speech and stuff. When I first started going to Soompi, I found lots of pleasure semi-flaming the stupider members of the board. I've become nicer after getting to know some of the people.

Some of the members there have a total disregard for grammar or punctuation and they often leave one word posts. Some of them type like that have a speech impediment, which btw is HILARIOUS. But you have to take in account that Soompi has a more varied demographic. We have loads of middle-schoolers. They just don't know any better.

Most of the regular posters are excellent and intelligent people though.

I have to post some of their responses to us.. its quite interesting.. and they do have us pretty pegged..

Soompi Forums wrote:
Check out the discussion that started with someone complaining that "Western guys in Korea like Korean women better and it's no fair" or some blabber like that. Come on, that's funny stuff! ^^;

that one was one of more funnier threads! Smile

Anyway it's interesting to read the other board and to get a taste of the underlying differences between this one and that one. Soompi is mostly Korean-Americans who worship Korean culture but don't live in it, Eslcafe is mostly Caucasian Westerners who live in Korea and who complain a lot about the culture.

Soompi Forums wrote:
f they are complaining a lot about the culture why are they still teaching there? just wondering....

How many millions of times has that up in our threads?

Look what user jajdude posted there:
ESL Cafe Quote wrote:

It's a dirty word perhaps but I definitely suffer from racist feeling quite a bit here. I'm not proud of it. I'm not consumed with hatred or anything, just experience times when I think "Boy these people are so dumb" or something similar or maybe worse than that. So I am a racist. Too bad. I always thought I was a pretty good guy but maybe have been here too long for my on good.

I think the crowdedness and homogenous nature of the country actually makes many people dumb. Is that racist or just foolish thinking? Or is there something to it that actually makes sense? Can one culture actually be dumber than another?

I think some of you will think, "Hey, we all think that sometimes." True. But sometimes I think that I feel this way too often for own my well-being.

Any other racists out there?

Kinda pissed me off...

but I don't think they're all bad there.

We really should watch what we talk about.. I do find it odd so many so-called 'enlightened' westerners say so many racist comments. When Koreans hear that stuff.. it shows more about 'us' rather than 'them'.. anyhow.. and Koreans do read our threads as insight into their genunie and good-hearted curiosity and interest into us..

Soompi Forums wrote:

forum wars are no fun

Anyhow, pretty interesting.. they seem like good guys.. if i read a whole board of alot of the junk posted on here.. and I was Korean.. well.. I'd definetley have alot of questions.. mainly 'why are they even there?' type questions.. well, thats one thing that gets talked to about to death on here as well.. but there are also alot of people who post on here who really like the place do.. so thats gotta be interesting i would think..

Soompi Forums wrote:
heh i spent a considerable time browsing through the general discussion & reading a lotta topics.

from what i gather, most of them are white guys who, used to being the top, are now experiencing their first tastes of racism. and they are most bitter about it.

it's kinda sad, but actually most teachers in your own school talk like that (not focusing on korea tho, but the students)
i remember a math teacher from my HS talking about a kid who didn't understand a problem and how maybe he should go to "underwater basket weaving for dummies" or something like that...

really i think most if not all of them should have read up on korea b4 they went there so they knew kinda what to be prepared for.
and it seems a lotta them think japan is better...lol fools~

heh i really enjoyed their topics involving racism, one guy was like "no one under 40 in america is racist"

That one was pretty good!!

Soompi Forums wrote:
i was amused at one point to see some ppl talking about japan like it's a lot better in it's treatment of foreigners,
cuz it's not better at all....nope nope.

I definetely agree with that one!! Japan is not BETTER.. no one seems to believe that about Japan until they actually go there! But I guess most teacher foreigners in Korea haven't been anywhere else.. so they can't adequately compare it to other places.. so they just 'assume' its somehow different there.. its not..

Soompi Forums wrote:
Personally, I don't have time to spend reading posts from this or that forum, etc., but I gather from what little I read that the ESL forum is mainly Americans struggling with culture shock. Been a while since I studied the levels, but I think that hostility toward the culture you're dealing with is one step along the path of understanding. Once you get past the honeymoon stage of "ooh, everything in Korea (or where ever) is so different and interesting" it turns to "I'm so frustrated because it's so different". I assume everyone living for a long period of time in a foreign culture goes through this, and I also assume that all those posters who are saying this and that bad thing about Korea will one day look back and shake their heads in dismay at what they said!

This is a great point!! Although technically its mostly Canadians in Korea.. but some Americans too (like me!).. but anyhow.. I've been back and forth to Korea many times and it keeps getting better and better and better.. and I miss the food, the people, everything!! But you really gotta step away from it.. go to other countries and try living and teaching.. and then go back home again.. once you do that.. you can see it with proper perspective.. and in my opinion, Korea rocks! Anyhow, that Soompi poster was right on the money on that one!!

Soompi Forums wrote:
as for me being a korean-american, i have mixed feelings about it.

i'm offended by some of the things those guys said, and
i also want to point and say, "hey! so now you know how I feel!!
you are going through the same thing that i had to go through
almost all my life... how does it feel, huh?"

but another part of me says, "i can understand your frustrations..."

i think it all comes down to lack of understanding on both cultures..

great post!! right on on that one!

Soompi Forums wrote:
I don't think it's as bad as some of you are making it. For every racist thread there is a group of level-headed individuals that logically defend Korea or any other group being prejudiced against.

Another good post! Whew, they do notice the caucasians of us who really do like Korea! We are here.. and to those who do struggle with Korea.. its just the it is when you aren't like everyone else.. I'm sure Korean-Americans or Korean-Canadians probably feel the same about the predominately white culture.. and some enjoy their special 'korean' status.. and others probably complain as equally as the ones here who don't like being in Korea.. such is the world.. its good to see both sides to get a more proper perspective on everything..

anyhow, quite interesting Gang Ah Jee!!!

You know, if I didnt feel the need to coat everything I post in so much sarcasm, that's what I would have said.

Heh! Which one of us signed up over on that forum and made this his avatar:

You know what they say about imitation and flattery. I hope they see the humour in it too... Smile

Seriously though, for the most part they're a nice bunch over there. That board fills a community need just like this one. And it's EASILY the best overseas ethnic Korean forum going - I've visited a bunch that are nothing but potty-mouthed trash. The mods at Soompi keep a close watch on things - they even locked the forum about us.

Some Soompiers were talking about joining here. If they made it, welcome!

hahahaha that's brilliant.

By the way, if the person I quoted in my first post on this reads this, sorry for using your post. Not that I thought it was dumb in itself, just that the forum users here probably wouldn't be interested in that kind of discussion.

And props to Hotuk for making such a good impression over there
