Today I tried to subscribe to the Korean Times. I put in my ARC number at the bottom of the page here:
http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/community/subscription.asp
It doesn't recognize me. It also didn't work for cyworld or auction.co.kr. I eventually registered for these two sites by faxing my ARC and passport.
Now I want to set up SMS messaging on NateOn. It asks for my phone number and ARC number. Of course it's not working. It says:
주민등록번호(또는 사업자등록번호)를 정확히 입력해주세요.
I believe this means that I'm not entering my ARC number correctly, but of course I am.
I've had my ARC for about 5 months and it's never helped me do anything online. |

주민 is 'citizen'. 사업자 is 'businessman'.
Being as we carry 외국인등록증 our cards generally won't get us registered on websites.
No fun for foreigners. |

Yeah it sucks. I want to play Sudden Attack at the PC Bang, but alas, it won't let me register unless a Korean does it for me. |

Foreigners Excluded From Korean Sites
Quote: |
More problematic is that non-Korean residents are not allowed to subscribe to most Web sites, including the country's biggest portals. None of Korea's top five most popular portals -- Naver, Daum, Nate, Yahoo Korea and Paran -- provides an English-language introduction to people who want to be members.
In order to subscribe to the sites, foreigners must learn Korean or enlist the help of Korean friends to fill out tons of personal information required by the portals. Foreigners who are ready to go through the lengthy registration process, however, will be frustrated again to find that the Web portals cannot identify foreign residency numbers.
"We ask the Korea Information Service to verify the numbers. But most foreign citizenship numbers are not included in the database so their identities cannot be verified," a spokeswoman for KTH, which operates Paran, said.... |

Don't take it personally. My background is database design, and I suspect it's probably just a case of careless design. It never occurred to them to allow for foreign ID numbers. They're morons, not racists. |

On a side note, isn't a little strange that an ID number is required to register on a website? It's akin to US citizens providing their social security number just to register on a place like YouTube. |

Interesting how Yahoo, an American Company, makes it impossible for foreigners to use it.
The website thing really does piss me off. I tried to register for a site so I could buy my desktop computer parts from there. It wouldn't let me so I called the company directly. I told them I was ready to spend over $1000 on their site as soon as I could get registered. The guy on the phone told me "No foreigners." I was speaking to him in Korean the whole time.
Needless to say, I took my business elsewhere. |

I'm finding out that there are a lot of US websites that won't allow you to access/use their site when logging on from a location other than North America.
Catch-22 really. Can't use Korean sites, and I can't use some US sites while I'm in Korea. |

Problems with registration have been around for a long time. |

I was going to watch some videos on KBS until they asked for my passport number. No way! |
