Condition distorts self-image, destroys lives
Sufferers of body dysmorphic disorder arent vain, theyre stuck on defects

For KD, the mirror is a trap that lures her in at least 30 times a day... KD suffers from body dysmorphic disorder (or BDD) and rather than basking in her beauty, shes fixating on her defects all day, every day. |
Quote: |
... people who suffer from BDD often feel that their appearance or some aspect of it, such as their skin or stomach or nose is ugly or horrible, or even monstrous. Theyll obsess about perceived flaws for an average of three to eight hours a day, compulsively checking their reflection in the mirror and/or comparing their appearance with others. |

Cosmetic surgery is another route those with BDD will often take.
|
Is it possible Korean women are checking for flaws, as opposed to admiring their beauty, when they obsessively look at their reflections? Certainly there are many Korean women who get and want to get cosmetic surgery (see here), just like the article talks about. |

I think that is a valid thought. Of course, I think it's more likely they are just trying to get all the reflections of the mirror and subway window just right to look at my ass. At least that is what I'm going with |

And the women who do have the sexy legs and nice faces flaunt them shamelessly thinking they're so great.
A lot of the guys (especially at my gym) aren't much better. |

I see a lot of girls taking photos of themselves with their handphone. I seriously doubt they have BDD~ |

Taking photos of every part of your body is the norm in Korea. Well, not every...
But in the west, it seems to be less common in public at least. On a slightly related note, if I were to get my camera out to take some pictures of the town, I could swear people give the strangest looks. It's like they look at you like your a child molester. People just aren't happy here (UK). They are like thunder clouds passing by. |

consumer culture+mass media= unrealistic expectations of body image. Nothing new. I am sure Korean men point out their flaws without hesitation just like the Korean men and women do to me here.
Hahaha, look beer belly. Oh, you, PIMPLE !!! |

I thought the high suicide rate was attributed to career-related stress in the highly competitive workplace environment that is Korea... |

I read a report saying Koreans are the most depressed people, but it was proved false. |
