Sounds like a neat way for the administrators to recoup their out of pocket expenses by adding some illegal VAT and calling it part of the compensation package...As I see it, the Korean administrators are just bent on controling everything the foreign instructors do when they are in their employ...They don't need to have a good reason. They do many things just because they can, and it is a way to exercise their power OR self-perceived power...

Hey Tobb!!! Good to see you!

Well, after finding this out I definitely won't be working at a certain school in Daegu.

Yep, it is a shame. Did you know about it before you arrived?

A little birdie told me that the school in question decided to do this without their permission.......nothing was mentioned about this in their contracts.

I brought this to the attention of the person who was recruiting for the school...........and..........well............

Anyway.......dodgy thing to do. Is it even legal?

Last thing I read on this was they can consider housing as part of your pay if you are a private contractor. Private contractors are not on E2 visas.

So bottom line if you are on an E2 visa you are not a provate contractor.

Of course this could be wrong. Waiting for Ttompatz to answer.

Yeah, I've heard something along those lines before.

Foreign teachers, working on an E-2 visa are only responsible for following payments from their checks.

1. Income Tax (EXCEPT FOR CANADIANS AND AMERICANS DURING THEIR FIRST TWO CONSECUTIVE YEARS TEACHING IN KOREA!!!!!!!!!!!!).

2. Resident Tax

3. National Pension

4. Insurance

Thats it.

The Income tax exemption is for the Korean income tax for two years and it's only for teachers in public schools not hogwan teachers.

The tax status of "independent contractor" is determined by the tax laws and the National Tax Service and it is not the same as your immigration or visa status which is set by the immigration laws and the administrators at Immigration.

Some fringe benefits such as housing allowances and free housing are taxable under some conditions and not taxable under other conditions. You can ask the tax office, but in the US, when you ask the IRS they give out the wrong answer to questions more than 50% of the time.

Don't expect government policies to be consistent or logical, not in Korea, nor in any other country.

What would a "house management expense" of 20,000 won be considered?

sconner, that sounds like a maintenance fee, which is a normal utility here. supposedly it pays for crap like someone coming by and picking up all the flyers on the floor in the hallway.

yours is really LOW, by the way. they often run in the 50,000-100,000 won/month range in the seoul area.
