UN to Grill Korea on Racial Discrimination

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is to scrutinize the 13th and 14th implementation reports submitted by Korean government last year. The hearing takes place at the conference hall of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva from Thursday to Friday.
Korea's chief delegate Chang Dong-hee, who is deputy ambassador in Geneva, will make the opening remarks on Thursday, followed by questions from the committee to Korean delegates. On Friday, there will be another Q&A session, and then a provisional evaluation of the Korean government's reports.

The Committee is expected to look into various issues including progress in ending discrimination against immigrant workers, protection of foreign wives from abuse, amendments to immigration law, punishment for crimes related to racial discrimination, prevention of human trafficking, discrimination against naturalized citizens and progress in the National Action Plan for the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights.

Korea's last two reports were examined in 2003, with the Committee concluding the government had made progress in legislation and regulations but Korean society lacked understanding of the issues of racial discrimination, and effective implementation of regulations had not been supported.

UNCERD consists of 18 independent experts. The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination had 173 signatory nations as of this month.

The racism industry does a great job at extorsion and blackmail. I think racism is OK sometimes. If we had a good debate, the debate would first thank korea for being a job making machine and admonish them for racism. The we'd admonish Belize for not making well paying jobs for people around the world who need "work".
