Im scheduled to come over to Korea on EPIK very soon. I just got back from my Dentist this morning in London and he was adamant that I needed a lot of work done mainly with regards to fillings even though my teeth feel fine and are fairly white as well (certainly whiter than the dentist I saw).

Is this covered by medical insurance in Korea and also how do you think the POE will react to claiming so early on into my contract?

BTW has anyone had an experience of going to Dentists in Korea my [Korean] friends inform me that are among the world's best and cheapest.

Of course he'll say that. I'm sure there are both good and bad dentists here.

I get the impression that the dental system here is more about repairs after the fact instead of preventative dentistry.

I went to a place for a cleaning and I was surprised that there was no checkup afterwards nor X-rays which would have been standard in the US.

Even back home I really wonder if I'm using the correct criteria to choose a dentist.

I am in the exact same position as you, and I am also going to risk it with the dentists in Korea when I arrive in a couple of weeks. From the research that I have done it seems that the standard is decent and for the price I think well worth it.

I think the standard health insurance covers fillings as well...and I need a couple!

As long as you have your health insurance card, there is no "claiming" per se. You just go and get the work done.

I just had a filling done two weeks ago. It's fine. A friend got all her wisdoms yanked here, no problem.

If you can weasel some time out, you can go to the Philippines for major work like implants bridges or veneers.

Of you have medical insurance, you'll give your card at the dentists office and that'll take a bite out of the bill.
Bite.
Get it?
Nyuk nyuk.
Dental work here is cheaper than back in North America if you don't have a dental plan there. That said, though, I've encountered a reluctance here to give the cheaper amalgam (silver) fillings, and I now have a gold tooth as a result. I'm going to have to get another one as well on my back molar, though that will be an inlay. As I recall, porcelain was even more expensive.
Ask for recommendations from your co-workers or friends you'll meet for a reputable dentist.

I'm gonna have a wisdom tooth yanked out in a few weeks (UK) - costing 150,000w approx.

Would the Korean alternative (with insurance) be cheaper, anyone?

(just out of interest really, since I'm happy with the price and would rather have it done by a Brit, if you'll pardon my saying so)

I'm getting two pulled on Friday and they said it's gonna cost around 20,000w. This is by a US-trained dentist in Gangnam, and I have insurance. So it seems it's much much cheaper here. Not looking forward to it though!

I've found Korean dentists surgeries to be very clean and hi-tech. Of course, I can't confirm on the quality of the actual dentists, but my experiences have been positive. You'll also be seen to much quicker than you would be in my homeland.

i'd like to get some work done myself, mainly a cleaning and a filling or two. i've got insurance and all so that doesn't bother me. but i was told that Korean dentists use little or no painkiller. i hope that was a complete falsehood...

I had one done last week and it cost me 7000 won with insurance...
No pain, no problems...i would seriously do it here.

I am getting a lot of work done(read root canal - i am stupid and let a cavity root way too long) at the moment and it is all virtually free exept i will need one filling at the end...

I have been to the dentist 4 times here and never one problem. Never any major pain and speaks good english too...
I have heard of some shifty ones but ask around and you should be fine. A good general rule is the newere and bigger the clinic the better. it will cost the same in any case...

This is the thing, some treatment is much cheaper. In my case fillings and cleaning is covered by the medical / health insurance but im not sure everything else is. Mate, my dentist charges around 45 a filling and then more on top for after treatment (a necessity) and x rays and plenty of other phaeces like that.

I also understand that contact lenses, glasses and general health to do with eyes is similarly cheaper and good quality.

True. I had a dentist here tell me ai had a cavity when I really didn't. Later, I went back to the states and everything was fine. No cavity. I was smart enough to not trust the Korean dentist. He would have drilled a perfectly Ok tooth. Last year, I went to my US dentist to have my teeth cleaned and ended up having to have a root scaling done on one tooth, due to almost 3 years of plaque build-up. I told my dentist I went for nearly 3 years without seeing a dentist because I was scared of the ones in Korea. It's been a year and almost 6 months since my last cleaning. I am having to force myself to go to a cleaning here soon. Rolling Eyes

Yes i amm but I wanted to avoid the stereotype about brits having bad teeth etc. Mine dont look bad / yellow its just the dentist says there is all kinds of things wrong with me.

i have never met a korean with black or rotten teeth but maybe that is all to come.
