I have a question concerning obtaining a criminal record check which may or may not be accepted by Korean immigration. My friend back home (Canada) is hoping to work in Korea late this fall. She recently tried to create an account here on Dave's, but they're not accepting new members until September. (??? anyone know what's up with that?) Anyhow, more importantly, I am here asking for help on her behalf. Like everyone else, she has to obtain a criminal record check. When she was 18 (nearly 7 years ago), she was arrested for shoplifting. She was taken to the police station and fingerprinted, but the store ended up dropping the charges against her, and she did not have to appear in court, and was obviously not convicted. She's worried that this might still show up on her background check and hurt her chances of having her visa processed. Does anybody know the likelihood of this happening? Thanks for your help.

I had a co-worker with a coviction for theft on his criminal record check. He explained the details of his crime to the school and was still hired and recieved a visa, so anything is possible. (He ended up pulling a midnight run his first month.) Smile

If there was no conviction there will be no record on a Canadian CRC.

I hope the dirty little thief gets whats she deserves. The streets of korea don't need anymore scumbags roaming free.

Such a dishonorable and shameless crime.

...An arrest will show up...in spite of the charge dropped--charged dropped--after the fact.

NOT on a Canadian CRC.

ONLY Criminal Code of Canada convictions appear unless there was jail time (served or suspended) associated with the conviction on the provincial offense.

They do NOT issue an arrest record.

Did you ever think that maybe the store was mistaken and that's why they dropped the charges?

I wonder if the delay is the result of Kevin's (our resident porno spammer) actions.

Uh oh, I have a pending trial on a drinking and driving offence coming up next year. You think that could show up on a criminal background check? I was arrested for it, but havent been convicted yet

... thank you central cali, that is precisely what hapenned. i didn't feel the need to fully explain the situation from the past on a public forum. i was asking for advice on obtaining a CRC, not your opinion, eddie183man. i appreciate all the others posters helpful responses.

I hope you sued their asses for making this mistake.

Why can't this sort of thing happen to me? I'd be sitting on a beach somewhere in Vietnam instead of teaching in SK. I'd enjoy each and every sunshiny day sipping on margaritas.

Why, because not everyone lives in the litigious states of America.
