What are your thoughts on the city of Seattle? I am going there for 3 days in late October and am looking for advice on things to see and do (aside from a seahawks game, which is booked). Any suggestions on places to stay? I am thinking the university area looks pretty good (at least hotels are cheaper and there could be nice places to eat and drink). Any suggestions?

The uni district is good place to drink coffee, the good bars are downtown and on Capitol Hill on broadway, visit the mecca cafe and five points cafe in belltown, visit queen anne and fremont, visit pike place market and buy fresh fish to cook at the hostel, go to seattle art museum.

The u district is rather remote from the downtown. The downtown is rather compact however and you can pretty much walk everywhere: capitol hill, the space needle, the stadiums, china town, pike's place market, etc.

At the five points cafe there is periscope over the urinals thats lets you look at the space needle while peeing.

You can see the blob on Queen Anne Hill. The building is a stucco blob that has housed many unsuccessful cafes.

You can see the Soviet surplus statue of Lenin in Fremont.

Portage Bay is a great place to go kayaking. There is a nince place that rents kayaks with a fabulous mexican restaurant above it called Agua Verde.

If you're looking for some interesting architecture check out the Seattle Public Library. There is also a non-profit organization that gives architectural tours. www.seattlearchitecture.org

My favorite bar there was Eileens located on The Hll. There are plenty of good bars but thats where I had the most fun. Linda's was very good, Five Points was nuts, I used to dance at the Down Under, I hung at the Sit and Spin, Bahaus and Cafe Roma. I didn't hang at the Puss Puss cafe.
I ate at Pagliaccis all the time as well as Taco Del Mar. I went to the Off Ramp and OK Hotel(?), the Crocodile Cafe, Showbox and that giant place on The Hill.

The was a lounge called "The Red Dog Saloon" I think, that had great diner food and it was peopled by 24 hour drunks and like characters. They remodeled and renamed the place "The Hurricaine Cafe" . They kicked the duffers out and repopulated with the exactly the same people but one generation later.

The saying "When you shake California by the foundations, all the loose nuts roll to Venice Beach" applies to Seattle for the northwest and then Vancouver for Canada.
