What kind of camera do you want? High features, compact size big zoom? I think Canon, Nikon and Olympus are all great choices for a beginner. For compact the digital elph series (may have a new name) by canon has always been good.

I recently bought the Olympus 790. It's a nice 7 megapixel 5x optical zoom camera and it's weatherproof (not waterproof). It's completely idiot proof with an onboard tutorial for choosing picture settings. It also has a dual image stabilization thing that works great. I bought it for around USD260 while in Japan. Great cam-thus far. I'd recommend it. Here are a few pics I've taken but keep in mind, I'm just a layman:

Point and shoot, at that price you can get almost anything.

DSLR - you can get into the Nikon D40 kit for 400k won. (body, lens, bag, filter).
