I have been using movies in my summer camp classes and all of my students want to see "The 300". It's rated 18+ though isn't it? Why, because of the violence? As if Korean kids or all kids in the developed world haven't already been exposed to mock decapitation?
I told them to get their parent's permission but whatever I says goes in one ear and out the other for most of them. I said a simple note would suffice, but my most advanced student still can't translate for me and I have no coteacher... I also have no other movie to show tomorrow.
If I were a parent the only thing I'd be concerned about, which is odd, is sexual situations. If I remember correctly, in this movie there's only one breast and the situation with the king of Sparta's wife and the conniving diplomat. Oh, and some stroking of the hunchback. Seriously though, is this to lascivious for middle schoolers? We just watched D.O.A. which might as well just be called T & A.

Sex & Nudity
(SPOILERS) There are four scenes or scene-sequences involving either sex or nudity or both. First, In a (brief) scene, the Oracle Girl writhes erotically wearing only a very thin, transparent garment that provides in effect full frontal nudity. Second, a (married) man and woman (the King and Queen) have sex in a scene during which she shows bare breasts, and he shows bare buttocks. This scene includes slow-motion sexual movements - implied, not explicit. In a third scene, the Queen is subjected to implied rough sex (or) possible rape by Theron. No nudity during this scene. There is a fourth scene involving some nudity that takes place in the Persian King's tent: several females bare breasts; an implied sexual scene (possible 69) plus an impassioned kiss between two women.
In addition to the above, the males often wear garments that leave them bare-chested and bare-thighed.

Movies can be a great teaching tool. Live action. Professional actors imitating real life situations using realistic dialog. Great variety.
There are two possible lessons plans:
a) Use a movie as part of a well-constructed lesson.
b) Kill time
I voted 'no' in the poll because there is nothing in your post about actually using the movie as anything other than a time killer. Maybe you just didn't mention it. But it's 9 o'clock at night and you still don't know if you are going to use it. Something tells me you will use it and your lesson plan looks like this:
a) Turn out the lights.
b) Turn on the DVD player.
c) Sit down for two hours.
d) Dismiss the kids. |

I didn't ask for a critique of what you consider my lesson MIGHT be like.
I asked whether or not it would be OK, in your opinion, to show material this "graphic and sexual" to teenage boys without their parent's consent?
But by all means, be high and mighty. |

ABSOLUTELY NOT! This movie is not rated for their age group. It has rape and violence that is unacceptable.
I teach middle school. I did show my 3rd years "Dude where's my Car?" They loved it and made cool DVD covers. Except they all run around saying "Zoltan". Dear gawd help me.
2nd years Alien Vs. Predator or Eight Legged Freaks and Stand By Me. Actually had some boys cry at the end. Freaked me out.
1st years loved and I mean loved "Over the Hedge" and all grades for some unknown reason thought "Goonies" was a work of art. Go figure. Same for Ghostbusters.
Princess Bride went over well with 2nd year girls and somewhat with the boys.
Projects after can be surveys, or DVD Covers. Have students make Movie Posters and review the movies like they do on TV.
However if I hear "My name is Iniego Montoya, prepare to die" I am going to scream! Really I mean it.

I show 300 to high school, but not young children. I think with small children, you want childrens shows like JJ the Jet plane, Sesame Street, and many others too numerous to list. The problem is I have no access to any equipment to play it on. Movies sounds like a good and easy lesson plan to take a break from the usual. Sounds like a good way to ease up on these over schooled kids. Is this a public school thing to do? Any of you have DVD, TV, or overhead projectors in your classroom? If only I had DVD player and TV available. Kids, get your books out, we are going to do some speaking and writing today and then play an old fashioned game. |

If you want to show a sure-fire hit with high school, show them "White Chicks." |

Don't .
Plus it doesn't have an iota of factuality and the problem is your inability to completely communicate this to students. Might be okay if they were English native speakers and could understand the historical inaccuracies and view it as such, "interpretation".
Education should stick to the truth. When you are using this to teach English, you have an inability to do so. So much else out there to show them and teachers have an obligation to fight against this same "sensationalism" with their own time in the classroom . So choose another......

I would never use it with my middle schoolers.
I would not use it with my high school 'Film as Lit Class' unless we had a LOT of time to kill and wanted to watch a bad movie and give a long history lesson. |
